IU Kelly vs Penn State Smeal
Just wanted some outside opinions on this. I am between Penn State for about 36k vs IU for 50k. I would most likely have to take out loans to cover the difference. I understand that I have to work hard wherever I go. Would IU give me a significant advantage over Penn State in terms of overall opportunities? Also is the NLF significantly harder to get into than the IB workshop?
Kelley
Based on the most helpful WSO content, when comparing IU Kelley and Penn State Smeal for investment banking opportunities, several factors come into play. Both schools have strong programs, but there are nuances that might sway your decision.
Investment Banking Workshop at IU Kelley: IU Kelley is renowned for its Investment Banking Workshop, which is highly selective but offers extensive training and networking opportunities specifically geared towards careers in investment banking. This program has a strong track record of placing students into top investment banks.
Nittany Lion Fund (NLF) at Penn State: The NLF is a student-managed investment fund that provides real-world experience in managing assets and making investment decisions. While it offers excellent practical experience, its direct focus on investment banking placements might not be as pronounced as IU's IB Workshop. However, it still represents a valuable opportunity for hands-on learning and networking within the finance industry.
Cost Consideration: You mentioned a significant difference in cost between the two schools. While IU Kelley might offer a slight edge in terms of specialized investment banking preparation, it's essential to weigh this against the financial burden of additional loans. The return on investment should be carefully considered, especially in a field like investment banking, where networking, internships, and individual drive can often level the playing field between candidates from different schools.
Alumni Network and Regional Preferences: Both schools have strong alumni networks, but it's worth considering your preferred geographic location for working after graduation. IU Kelley might have a stronger network in the Midwest, while Penn State could offer more connections in the Northeast. This could influence internship and job opportunities in investment banking.
In conclusion, while IU Kelley might provide a more structured path into investment banking through its IB Workshop, the difference in opportunities may not justify the additional cost, especially when considering the need for loans. Both programs require hard work and proactive networking to break into investment banking. The decision should also factor in personal financial considerations and where you envision yourself working geographically.
