Maryland MSF
I got my acceptance email to Maryland for their MSF program in DC. I was just wondering what the general consensus on this program is. Anyone an alum and can share their experience? Any current students? Any information would be great.
As it stands right now, my list goes Villanova, Ohio State, Boston College, Maryland. Got accepted to Maryland, waiting on Nova, finishing Ohio State as we speak, and Boston College is next. Any other schools recommended in this range?
Thanks.
I think Maryland is a good school, but others on your list are better. Any scholarship money with Maryland?
IMO, I'd rather do Johns Hopkins in DC than Maryland. That is if you are married to DC.
TNA is right.
If DC isn't a must (and it sounds like it isn't given your other applications), I would put it last on the list unless you want to work for/with the government.
What is your end game?
I'm hoping to get into an equity research type role. And hopefully end up in the Philly/NYC area, hence Nova being #1 on my list.
Thanks for the response. I'm not married to DC, and honestly, Maryland was kind of my safe bet. I'm really hoping for Villanova because of it's placement in Philly and NYC. Apparently Maryland doesn't make decisions on scholarship money until early December so I guess it is just a waiting game for that.
I put in my Nova application a couple weeks ago. Do you have any idea how long the decision process normally takes? I was told it was a rolling admissions so just trying to see when I should expect an answer and (hopefully) stop applying to other schools. lol
Shoot me a PM. Maybe I can find out. What are your stats?
Sent a PM TNA but just so other can see stats too:
Graduate 2013 from Large State School in Florida B.S. in Mathematics and Minor in Business Administration GPA: Cumulative - 2.61, Major - 3.1, Last 2 years - 3.0+, Last semester - 3.5 (Dean's List), General upward trend after I switched from Engineering to Math. GMAT: 730 - 49Q - 41V No relevant work experience but equivalent of Assistant Manager for the last year. Extras: Passed Exam 1/P and Exam 2/FM of the Actuarial Exams
As an alum for one of the schools listed, I would say to evaluate your choices with information and responses from other people who have gone through the program.
Well since you are an alum, do you care to share any experiences? Pros? Cons?
Undergrad alum, but interacted with MBA and MSF students.
TNA, I've got a friend interested in Villanova, too (as some know, I'm interested in getting an MSF but part-time while working in DC.). Large state university in Virginia, 6 or 7 years of work experience, finance undergraduate, 2.5 undergraduate GPA, 720 GMAT. Clear career path in government and/or commercial banking. Does a profile like that have any shot at full-time Villanova?
I mean the issue wouldn't be whether they would be accepted, the issue would be why an MSF and not an MBA? The GPA is irrelevant with that much work experience and the GMAT is good. Assuming that person had increasing responsibility they would be good candidates for maybe T10-20 MBA programs.
So do I think the person would get into Nova? Yes. Do I think it is a good fit for them? Would have to know more to advise that.
I think he wants to work for government or pseudo-government, such as Federal Reserve, FDIC, or SEC or something like that and he's passionate about finance. He's balked at even applying because of the GPA.
I mean if he worked for the government they would equate an MSF to an MBA so that would be fine. Tell him his GPA isn't an issue. 7 years work experience is a better judge than undergrad.
