Masters in Finance
Hi All,
I am interested in going into S&T, I am thinking of doing a masters in finance because I was not able to secure a spring or a summer in a bank apart from a 1 month internship in the finance department of an investment manager. I understand breaking in now as a grad scheme without solid experience will be a task and a half. My background is a bachelors in economics. I wanted to ask once I do a masters and break in into S&T, will I be placed on the same analyst level as people who have just done their bachelors or will I be a more senior analyst ? Secondly, will the masters in finance aid career progression? Will i be able to work through the ranks much quicker and go further in a bank than my bachelor counterparts?
Just wanted to hear people's experience of doing a masters in finance and their experience of work after they graduated and broke in.
I am thinking of applying Oxford (MFE),LBS(MFA),LSE/IMPERIAL (MF).
Is it worth applying UCL MSC finance too?
Thanks
1) You'd be a grad like anyone else - no special treatment for those who've done a Masters.
2) I invite others to disagree, but I don't think a Masters provides much if any advantage. The content is largely academic and, while there may be some applicability, it'll be limited. Once you're working, people tend to forget about academic history.
3) Yes - no harm in more applications unless you're super confident you'll definitely get one or more of the others.
For those coming from non-target background I'd say it helps bridge that gap, but generally yes I think they are overrated. Not everyone who does an MSc gets an internship except for LBS probably.
OP if you want S&T, why Finance and not FE? Hiring managers would definitely prefer someone who understands the products and can utilise math/technical skills to apply to them.
I think it’s completely worth it for the sheer fact it’s going to give you another network
