IB Recruiting Question
Hi all,
Wanted to ask from people how hard it would be for somebody who has been doing middle office work for private credit pre-mba to be able to recruit for TMT coverage group specifically when going to get mba. I don’t feel like I have any obvious thing to point to in order to show why it would make sense but it’s the area I really want to go into from an interest standpoint point (which I know how generic that sounds). Very interested in internet companies and also have been doing a lot of deep dives in the semiconductor industry and whole supply chain with the AI surge right now and have been capitalizing that for my own personal trading.
I’ll be going to one of NYU/Cornell/Tuck for my mba for context
Thanks in advance!
Based on the most helpful WSO content, transitioning from a middle office role in private credit to a TMT coverage group post-MBA is definitely possible, but it will require a strategic approach. Here's how you can position yourself effectively:
Leverage Your MBA Network: Schools like NYU, Cornell, and Tuck have strong alumni networks in investment banking. Use this to your advantage by networking with alumni in TMT groups. Attend events, reach out for informational interviews, and build relationships early.
Highlight Your Interest in TMT: Your personal interest in internet companies, semiconductors, and the AI surge is a great starting point. Use this to craft a compelling narrative about why you're passionate about TMT. Showcase your deep dives and personal trading experience as evidence of your commitment and understanding of the sector.
Develop Technical Skills: If you haven't already, consider taking financial modeling courses or leveraging resources like the WSO Financial Modeling & Valuation Bootcamp. This will help you demonstrate your technical proficiency, which is critical for TMT roles.
Position Your Middle Office Experience Strategically: While middle office work isn't directly related to TMT, you can frame your experience in terms of transferable skills. Highlight any analytical work, exposure to financial products, or collaboration with front office teams that can be relevant to TMT coverage.
Target TMT-Specific Internships: During your MBA, aim for summer internships in TMT groups at investment banks. This will provide you with direct experience and make your transition smoother.
Prepare for Interviews: TMT groups often look for candidates who are not only technically strong but also have a genuine interest in the sector. Be ready to discuss industry trends, recent deals, and your perspective on the future of TMT.
By combining your MBA resources, personal interest, and strategic positioning, you can make a strong case for transitioning into a TMT coverage group.
