MBA - Management skills

I currently am running my parents company for the last 2 years but I feel that my management skills are lacking. I want to go to an MBA school preferably top 10 but don't know if it is a good idea. I figure I can learn some, isn't running a company the end goal of an MBA program, but also more importantly make some strong connections. Is going to an MBA school a good idea? What can I really learn?

In your situation I wouldn't bother. Assuming that hopefully both of your parents are still around, you can learn from them. I am assuming that they started this company from the ground up. Had to know how to deal with every issue, could work any job function in the company and train anyone to be a pro at any aspect of the business. No MBA is going to teach you what your parents can in this case. MBAs are great................. if you work for someone else.

If you want to learn how to run shit learn from a boss. Your parents sound like bosses, learn from them. Read some mgmt books at the library or network with leaders in industry to get their opinions on stuff.

What MGMT books do you recommend?

the brand name and network you gain from an MBA could help your company down the line. you're getting great experience running your own show right now but an MBA is not without merit. I've met several people who came from a family business background and know they are going back to that but wanted to beef up their skills. The Columbia J-term is great for that, lots of people in the family business in that program.

Good Feedback. How have you found having the brand name from an MBA help?
