MBA OCR... tips to get closed listed for interviews?
I plan to submit my resume for several OCR postings. Any tips to get closed listed? Also, if a cover letter is shown as optional, do I need to submit one? I've never had much luck with cover letters getting me any interviews.
Not an MBA student, but from what I understand a CL might help, but not including one will probably hurt.
Doesn't take long to write one, and it shows your interest in the company and/or position.
Where do you go to B school? Typically you don't submit the formal application until EOY. You may be submitting informal resumes so they know what their recruiting pool is. That said, getting to the closed list rounds is dependent upon your interactions with the people you meet at the firm during the recruiting process. I would recommend not trying to be a "know-it-all" and actually being a normal person that they would enjoy hanging out with. The fall recruiting process is mostly about fit -- the interview / technical questions are where they determine the rest.

If by EOY, you mean December, that's true for many summer internships. Otherwise, what you describe isn't "typical" for my school or any others that I'm familiar with.
In my experience, applications for full-time positions (so 2Y students) start coming due in September, with interviews for some fields (e.g. consulting and banking) wrapping up mid-October.

For MBA OCR jobs, you should always submit a cover letter even if it is optional. Although very few cover letters will get you an interview that you otherwise would not have gotten, not including one is a sign of laziness and lack of interest in the job. The are easy to write, no longer than one page including basic contact info.
To get to close list, you have to prework, which means networking, attending company presentations, etc.
Also, any students who are sponsored by the companies are good to target - a lot of firms will ask them to help them pick.
