McGill Economics for Montreal IBD?
Hey everyone. My aim is to work in IBD but unlike many I'd prefer to stay in Montreal and stick to a Big 5 Canadian bank rather than aiming for an American BB.
Anyone know if a major in economics from McGill is a good choice for this or should I attempt to get into Ivey after 2 years?
For Toronto and the US it's Ivey>Queens>McGill, but for Montreal IB jobs specifically McGill is far and away the best choice.
Would an Econ degree get me in or would I solely have to be in their Management/Business undergrad?
Yes, you just might have to network a bit extra and self study the technicals harder. You're competing against mostly finance majors that have covered this stuff in class, and technicals in Canada are usually tougher as is.
Montreal IB scene is relatively small and most banks require you to speak French. If french is not mandatory, expect a lot of your coworkers to communicate in French together.
From my experience, placement is basically: * 40% McGill * 40% HEC Montreal (mostly from student investment fund) * 10% JMSB (mostly from student investment fund) * 10% mixed between ESG UQAM, ULaval, USherbrooke...
There is virtually no Ivey and Queens presence in Montreal because most kids are aiming for Toronto/US where they have a good network and campus recruting for Montreal IB almost only targets Montreal schools.
