Need some help about choosing B school(MSF program)

Dear all, I am a Chinese girl with some working experence. Not long but in Finance industry.

Now I am applying for this year's MSF program in the States. And I have been accepted by University of Rochester and University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign. The former one gave me some scholarship so that the cost of both school is pretty much the same.

I think these two programs are in the same level. But still I can go to only one of them. Many students want to find a job in US. I should say I will also give myself a try. However the economy is still not very good for international students, so I also have plan B to find a job in Asia.

UIUC in China is know by more people than UR I think. But UR is really a good school, isn't it? So I really need some advice here...thank you very much!!!

What do you want to do after the MSF? Where do you want to live within the US?

As a UIUC grad (not MSF program), I would tell you to go there. You won't experience too much culture shock as there are a ton of kids from China. I don't think I have ever met a Rochester grad in finance, but I don't really know anything about their program.

I will say that it will be very difficult to break into banking or consulting with a MSF at UIUC and an interenational undergrad. When I was at a BB in NYC, we used to go back to recruit at UIUC. We rarely interviewed MSF students for analyst positions (despite receiving a lot of resumes) because it was often too difficult to determine what their undergrad performance meant and what work experience they had. The ones that did get interviews had internships with recognizable global firms in groups that we were aware of. I believe we hired one student from the MSF program out of maybe 15 total in my three years recruiting there.

You can take this information as you wish. I believe that 90% of UIUC MSF students are international students and most of them take up jobs in Singapore and Hongkong. From what I have heard, only TWO of the international students were able to get INTERVIEWS by US firms. Don't know whether they got the jobs. For the USA citizen MSF students from UIUC, the placement rate was 100%.

Yeah, I got that info from someone who is doing the MSF at UIUC now. Put me right off the program as I wanted to work in the US afterwards. Stay clear I'd say.

PM me and I can get you in touch with the person doing the MSF

Based on strictly name brand, I would go with UIUC, but since you are Chinese, I can't say for sure how you would do with placement. In any event, I would still go to UIUC in any case over Rochester.

TraderDaily, are you living in US now? do most American think UIUC's brand name is better than UR? I heared many ppl in those states other than NY never heard of UR...but on the other hand, it is said that many UR graduates can find good jobs in Cali or some other states. don't know the reality tho.

Thank you TraderDaily. Your info is important to me. Some Chinese students rank UR very high yet it might be a little bit misleading I guess. But how should I value the official ranking by US News? (UR is higher than UIUC)

You can't just look at USNews rankings. That can be deceptive since there are people in the US who haven't even heard of Rochester. EVERONE knows about UIUC however, especially if you want to work in banking or S&T in the midwest, i.e. Chicago.
