Non-EU | S&T → LBS MFA → London IB/PE? Need honest thoughts on path + school choice

Considering doing a master's and have heard mixed opinions would appreciate input.

Indian citizen, undergrad from a top Indian engineering school (IIT), semi-target internationally. Will have 1 year of experience at a BB in S&T (EM Rates/FX) in Mumbai, India before the program. Looking to pivot into London IB and eventually move to PE (MF/UMM preferred).

Considering the LBS MFA (2026-27), but a bit unsure:

  • Is this realistic? I have gone through a lot of posts highlighting declining placements at LBS MFA.
  • Would it help lateral into a stronger IB group or platform with better exits to PE?
  • How does it compare to other MFin options like Oxford, Cambridge, or Imperial?
  • Do London headhunters and PE funds take this path seriously, especially for associate-level recruiting post-IB?

Interested in working in London mid-long term.

Any thoughts are appreciated. Have a good day.

  1. The placements are gonna be fine in the circumstance where students either have lots of SA experience or in your  case full time experience is double good. Where it gets difficult is people with little relevant experience who cannot convert because you are competing against all the undergrads and other masters. This all to say it is probably still more difficult than previous years.
  2. Meh, its a pretty random process for recruiting, so if this is your goal I advise against it.
  3. Cambridge should not be considered. Ox > LBS > Imperial.
  4. Just to check, you know MFA/Mfins, recruit to the analyst level in the same pool as undergrads? PE hiring is very scant at this level, and should not be relied upon.

Thanks for the detailed reply! Really appreciate it.

A few clarifications and follow-ups based on your response:

  1. On my background: I'll have 1 year of full-time experience in Sales & Trading (EM Rates/FX) at a BB in London, not IB. I understand this isn’t a direct match for M&A or coverage roles, but would this front-office markets experience still strengthen my case when recruiting for IB roles post-MFA? Would it help me laterally position into a stronger group (e.g., sector/coverage or sponsor-backed roles) with better PE exits?
  2. On the general pipeline: Given my aim to move from S&T → LBS MFA → IBPE, is this still considered a viable (if competitive) route? I understand that recruiting is random and competitive, but I'm trying to evaluate if the path is structurally sound or fundamentally weak, especially given my non-EU status and goals of working mid-to-long term in London.
  3. On PE recruiting expectations: I fully understand that PE recruiting post-MFA → IB is extremely limited and would not rely on that happening directly. My intent is to get into IB first (ideally at a strong group/platform), work for a few years, and then recruit for PE at the associate level with that IB experience. In your opinion, does this route (especially starting from S&T) hold credibility with headhunters and PE funds in London?

Man if you're already in london bb, no matter what group, and that doesn't help, I do not know what would. However, I'd also be just as cautious leaving that to go re-recruit in a pool of big fish that is largely random. A bird in the hand is better than two in the bush. But yeah you have a huge leg on the other students.

I don't see why it would not be competetive, especially you acknowledge going to IB first. The one thing I'd be cautious for is if you didn't end up at a BB again, other then that I think you are fine.

Realistically if you can finance it, you seem to know what you are doing so go for it.
