Non-Target Undergrad School NY, NJ

Out of St. Johns, Baruch, Hofstra, Stonybrook, and Rutgers which one is looked at as the highest regarded in the finance industry? or any other non-targets in this area you may be familiar with?

If you are talking about finance in general, and not necessarily IB, then Baruch is solid and a strong target for ops and control. If you are talking about banking, then you are going to have a great deal of work cut out for you regardless, and the key will be in the networking and club involvement. Out of the schools you've listed, I'd probably go with Hofstra or Baruch (Baruch is in NYC, which is helpful to a degree in terms of winter and spring internship ops).

Unfortunately, it's Ops. Still, he has GS on his resume and already has an "in" with them plus the connections he is going to build from the position.

Here to learn and hopefully pass on some knowledge as well. SB if I helped.

Yeah - GS recruits a lot from regional colleges, (Baruch, Rutgers, St. Johns) for those positions. But Ops is not necessarily the "in" your friend may be thinking. As has been discussed on this site kind of ad naseum, Ops (and other back/middle office positions) are basically what you make of them. You're in the same organization (and maybe the same building) as FO people, but that's about the only inherent advantage you have. After that it's all about working your ass off, networking, and getting the hell out. If your friend thinks she'll be able to do Ops for 18 months and apply to an FO position via some kind of internal job posting board, she will be in for a rude awakening.

Just like what you said, its what he is going to make of it. I'm sure he'll put in the effort for what his goals are. The only thing that may be working against him is that he is in the Jersey office......
