Northeast college choices
My son starting college search. Attends a NYC private prep school., Wants a job on Wall Street. He will apply to Chicago for economics but we need some target schools. Looking at Northeast schools: Middlebury, Colgate, Lehigh. Any other suggestions?
Current student here at Chicago. I would say Middlebury is not a "target" for anyone lol. Also, make sure your son is ready for the rigor here. I think some people underestimate the core reqs and the overall workload that is expected here. I have some of my friends struggle to keep up with the workload and end up with a less-than-ideal GPA as a result. Chicago is def a target for NYC, but you still can't get by with a lowerish GPA. Another school I think that may be worth looking at (and is great for NYC banking) is Gtown. It seems to have great placement from reading this website and from talking to my friends there recently back home, it seems to not be as rigorous as Chicago. It seems to still have similar great placement except it has a different, more traditional college enviro. However, I guess in the end if you don't like rigor, Chicago is not a good fit for you at all. Another school that is guess is OK that is perhaps a "match school" is BC. It is definitely a semi-target (despite what some hardo alums say), but it is not a bad backup school / match school. Good luck!
The ivies.......
All of the Ivies, MIT (not common for kids to go into IB but those who want to pursue it shouldn't have any problems), Williams, Amherst, NYU (Stern)
I think people are confused. “Target schools” in college admissions are schools you have a good shot at. “Reach schools” are schools below 15% or so, ivies/Stanford. That is what she is talking about.
From those 3 schools- Middlebury and Colgate.
Louis Bacon went to Middlebury and it’s just behind Williams/Amherst.
Colgate is a top 10 HF school, surprising but google it. I have friends at both schools that are satisfied.
I personally think of Lehigh just below those 2
Boston College, Villanova, Northeastern
IU Kelley is a good safety if he qualifies for Direct Admit.
He may also want to look into Fordham for its GBHP program and PennState if he gets into Schreyers Honors.
For New England I would consider Bowdoin, Middlebury, and Boston College. For the Northeast look at Colgate, NYU, and if he’s very bright of course look at the ivies.
If your son thinks he has a fighting chance at U Chicago, then he should also apply to Williams and Amherst; Williams, in particular, has very strong connections on Wall Street (though, contrary to what an earlier post claimed, I would say that Middlebury also does just fine). And, as long as he's applying to Chicago/Midd/Williams/Amherst, he might as well apply to a few of the Ivies; Cornell and Dartmouth send loads of grads to finance, and both have a rural Northeastern vibe not too dissimilar from that at Middlebury.
If he is applying to Colgate, he might also want to consider Hamilton, which is similar to Colgate in many ways. Another one to toss into the mix would be Colby, though Hamilton and Colgate have stronger connections to Wall Street. Good luck!
all of those are good schools and i have friends at each. if you do the right stuff (gpa, networking, interview prep) you can get into IB no doubt about it. of course, probably won't get GS unless he absolutely crushes it, but undoubtedly could get most BB, some EB, most MM, or LMM PE. also big 4 consulting. going to any of those schools will open enough doors that it'll be on him to succeed.
Cornell, Dartmouth, Penn, Brown, Williams, Amherst
BC, Georgetown, Middlebury
I would also add Bucknell, really similar to Colgate
