NYU Stern (No Fin-aid/Tuition) vs. Boston College full ride vs. Umich Ross (no fin aid)

Hello, I am a student for fall 2021 that has been admitted to these very nice schools. Unfortunately my parents fall under the category of too rich for aid too poor for college :(. Above are the schools that I am heavily considering. Personally, I want to go to a school that will give me a chance to break into either IB or asset management. However, I do also want to have a college experience( campus/sports/parties/ etc.) and a high quality education.

NYU Stern

Pros: Prestige?? Ranking???  City Proximity? To be honest, beyond just the placement, its not a school I like in terms of the academia/culture

Cons:

To be honest, im not really sure what makes the school so special besides the location. I simply just applied because there seemed to be a hypetrain for NYU this year.

Cost of living in NY will be high

School sports is very sad

Seems like the school where people breathe IB or whatever prestigious post-college job (where are the other interests in life?)

The debt I will be in is massive!

Boston College CSOM:

Pros: Full ride Scholarship

Very nice Campus

Nice neighborhood-- a good balance between proximity to city while also having a small town.

Very nice people

there is an LSE study abroad bridge program that looks very cool

I like the core cirriculum!

Cons:

It's a good school, but is it really prestigious?

Unfortunately their basketball has been trash

Pwi -- where the diversity at?? (not a huge deal since I've dealt with this a long time)

Administration is notoriously not very complaint/responsive to issues at BC.

Dorming situation doesn't look amazing.

Umich Ross:

I really like the academic curriculum for business undergrads (discussion/project-based curriculum)

Sports are very legit!

School Spirit was very nice when I visited

Ive had alot of friends that went here and they all had very positive experiences.

Cons:

Cost-- I got no aid unfortunately

Weather-- I dont think i can suffer harsh winters in michigan

Class size: the class sizes are huge... Im not sure how i feel about this yet

Far away from home-- my parents wont be able to visit me to often

I heard Umich is one of the schools where you gotta join a frat for exclusive business insights-- if true, im not sure if that is my kind of thing.

These are my top 3 schools that I was looking into. I was also accepted into UCLA, Williams, Tufts, BU, Northeastern, USC, Amherst.

Out of all the schools you mentioned, it sounds like Boston College is the best bet. A full ride is hard to turn down. I also noticed that Amherst and Williams were on your list as well. If you got aid at either of those schools, that could be a great option as well.

Stern and Ross are the most prestigious on your list but a full ride is hard to turn down. Did you get any financial aid at UCLA, Williams, or Amherst? If those options turn out to be much cheaper than NYU/Mich, then you could go there.

I am out of state for UCLA so the aid was very minimal. Also in terms of Amherst and Williams, I did not get much aid. Is Carroll not very prestigious? someone showed me some data and it seemed like they placed very well for AM and BB.

I'd say go with Ross. UMich is a fantastic school for everything you're looking for. Great social life and sports, but also incredibly solid recruiting opportunities. COL is also much much lower than NYU, so while tuition might be comparable on paper, you'll be spending significantly less overall at UMich while also getting a 10x better experience than NYU. If you really want IB I wouldn't really consider BC because you've got such a great option in UMich

BC places pretty well already. If you also got a full ride, you're a cut above the rest of the talent at BC which should make it easier.

Did you get the Gabelli scholarship?

I honestly don't know about recruiting at BC but I know UMich is a really strong target. If you can afford UMich, I would say to go there

Yeah, at this moment I am thinking of getting a graduate degree, and I would prefer to take on student debt during graduate school. Is this a smart idea? Also, is boston college  at a good enough stage where if I get a good GPA/GRE, I would be considered for top grad schools?

Its good enough that if you really excel academically and have some decent extracurriculars you can get serious looks from any top grad school/BB IB. However its not going to be enough to be average or slightly above average...if you go to BC you need to be ready to grind because the prestige factor won't be helping you out like it is at the other schools.

Given the financial concerns - BC is the easy choice. Stern's only true advantage is its location. Michigan has a strong alum base but is p expensive. I think top students at BC can compete with the students at Stern and Michigan so you should be able to break in if you work hard. The LACs are solid - if you get a better package from one of them, then I'd take one of those.

Decide between Williams, Amherst, UM, and BC.

The debt you incur is small over the course of a career, but it is huge for the first several years after school. If you incur debt to go to Michigan, Amherst, or Williams, you will have to obtain and work at a high stress, high paying job for the first several years after school. If you go to BC for free, you can go join the peace core or do law school or get your phd in history.

Point being, you have some great options ahead of you. Your choice depends entirely on your goals, and how comfortable you are with debt. If you know you want IB, go to your favorite of Michigan, Williams, Amherst. If you are not deadset on IB, do BC. BC with no debt may give you less career optionality, but you will have more life optionality because you won't have any debt.

I wouldn't discount Williams/Amherst recruiting pipelines.  Smaller in volume but less competition and alumni pull for you more.  Also, they are just on a different pedigree compared to the other schools.

Williams/Amherst vs BC is the question you should be asking.
