PhD a problem for MBA?

Hey everyone, I would like to get a MBA later in my life and was thus wondering if a PhD in Finance or Business Studies would hurt my chances of getting into a Top 3 US Program?

Thanks

If you're planning on doing a PhD in finance, is it safe to assume you want to be in academia? If not, why do it?

well I am from europe, and over here it is quite common to go all the way to a phd before entering the work field or at least do your phd later. however, since i want to go back to the US, the MBA looks like best option to do so.

and no, no academia for me

At HBS there are a handful of PhD MBA students, almost all with PhDs in sciences. That said, a PhD is a worthwhile thing to do and will help you a lot in some fields, and frankly getting into a program like that is a lot of luck, so I wouldn't derail what I wanted to do in my life to impress HBS because it's not clear what will matter to them when you apply. If you want a PhD in a field that's obviously relevant to your future career in finance, I say do it.

I was thinking about this earlier. I have read here that many of the top b-schools want most of their students to be in the 25-28 age range. And I know the top b-schools want you to have some work experience also, so I don't really know how having a Phd will affect your chances.
