Rising Sophomore: Colby for 38k and recruit here or Transfer to a target school

Hi everyone,

Looking forward to some straightforward opinion.

Background:

  • International, woc, non-athlete, yes you might have inferred who I am given that there are not a lot of people at Colby with these indicators. No family connections in IB or front office roles.
  • Received financial aid with a family contribution of 38.2k this fall. I didn't have any financial aid for my first year, but I have appealed for financial aid due to some unexpected layoff inside the family.

I’ve heard different ideas from people. Some say I should transfer to a target or semi-target (like UChicago, Northwestern, Cornell, or UCLA, UCB, UMich ) and look for full-time jobs later, because with my background there’s no way I’ll land a summer analyst offer from a non-target. Others say it’s not worth the huge cost, given the current economic status and uncertainty of obtaining a work visa

From my perspective:

  1. Regardless of where I go, I still face the same risk of not getting H1B sponsorship after graduation.
  2. If I can't win the h1b lottery and end up going back home, I think it would be "safer" for me to graduate from a school that has a strong global reputation. That’s why if I'm applying for transferring, I’m only looking at places like UChicago, Cornell, or UCLA/UCB/UMich, not private schools like Emory, Vandy, Rice (I can't deny that they are all great schools, but HRs in China don't seem to recognize them as much as the previous ones).
  3. But honestly, I can’t say that the cost of 100k/year is easy for my family, and I can’t guarantee that I’d earn it back within a few years after graduating. The people who told me to transfer and defer graduation are mostly other Chinese kids of my age, not people actually working in financial services, and I feel like they don’t fully get how much harder it is to make money these days, especially with the economy slowing down.

Just wondering what you all think. Is it worth transferring mainly for better OCR and brand, or should I try to grind it out from Colby? Would love to hear any ideas or thoughts. Thanks.
