Schools to Look At
Hi All,
I’m currently a rising senior in high school and am looking for schools with a strong undergrad financial economics (non business school) program and record of placing kids into IB or PE roles.
A little bit about me. I’d consider myself a competitive applicant with a 36 ACT and nearly straight As at a T20 high school in the country (school doesn’t do GPA or class rank).
Are there any schools which come to mind as fulfilling both my wants?
Northwestern’s Mathematical Methods in Social Sciences, Uchicago Econ, and MIT financial economics are the programs that come to mind that I’ve seen in super days this cycle
You do you but I would say it’s a bad idea to automatically discount schools like Wharton, Michigan, and NYU simply because they have a business program. They, and other top public schools like UNC, UVA, UT, UCB, all have great placement into banking, maybe less so in PE for undergrad but definitely still place kids in.
Would recommend looking at the target schools posted above and shotgun apply to them to maximize your chances. Also recommend top LACs if you’re really serious about economics.
Your profile is the exact same as mine from high school. I had a 36 ACT, 1600 SAT, and 4.7 GPA (3.98 UW) from a top NYC prep school. For IB and PE (and PE in particular), you're going to want the best pedigree you can possibly get. You can study art history at Princeton and get into top IB--and get into top PE--but the UT applicant who lucked into IB will not get into PE. Apply to every T10 school on US News except JHU and Caltech. If you have legacy anywhere, choose that school as your SCEA/REA/ED. If not, I'd EA your favorite HYPSM and do ED2 to UChicago if your early doesn't work out. UMich, UVA, and NYU Stern should be fine as safeties for you.
How would someone from Caltech or JHU fare in the recruiting process?
I don't think it would be necessarily hard coming from amazing schools like that, just harder to get advice on the process since so few students choose IB from those universities.
