Should I do ANOTHER masters?

Right, so I m facing a huge dilemma.

I come from an absolute no-name non target for my bachelor degree in finance, where i was then offered a 100% scholarship to study a masters in finance there too, naturally I accepted the offer. For reference, this university is in the bottom 10 universities in the UK.

I managed to secure a 6 month internsip as a private credit analyst post graduating from my masters, but now that is coming to an end. I have a return offer, but its not what I want to do. I want to follow my dreams and break into IB M&A at a BB or EB firm.

The main question behind all of this is if I should pursue another masters degree at a 'Target'. I have had an offer from WBS for the MSc Finance program but im wondering if I should wait 1 more year, grind the GMAT and go for LSE/Oxbridge..?

The reasoning behind all of this is becase ive had 100+ networking calls with Analysts/Associates/VPs/MDs from the top BB and EBs and they have all told me the same thing... that they will not hire someone from my university. Ive even been on calls, and as soon as I mention my university name, they hang up, and in some cases I have just been blocked.

I would greatly appreciate anyones advice here, I hate that my intelligence/knowlege is completely being looked past due to my previous university choices.

Based on the most helpful WSO content, pursuing another master's degree at a target school could significantly improve your chances of breaking into IB M&A at a BB or EB firm. Here's a breakdown of your situation and potential next steps:

  1. Your Current Position:

    • Coming from a non-target university and having a private credit analyst internship is a good start, but as you've experienced, the lack of a strong brand name on your CV is a major hurdle in IB recruitment.
    • The feedback from your networking calls confirms that many firms heavily weigh the prestige of your educational background.
  2. WBS MSc Finance vs. LSE/Oxbridge:

    • Warwick Business School (WBS) is considered a semi-target for IB roles, meaning it can open doors but may not guarantee the same level of access as LSE, Oxbridge, or other top-tier programs.
    • LSE and Oxbridge are full targets for IB, with strong alumni networks and direct pipelines to BB and EB firms. If you can achieve a competitive GMAT score and secure admission to one of these programs, it would likely provide a stronger rebranding opportunity.
  3. Timing and Strategy:

    • If you can afford to wait a year and are confident in your ability to achieve a high GMAT score, aiming for LSE or Oxbridge is a better long-term investment for your career goals.
    • Use the additional year to strengthen your profile further—consider gaining more relevant work experience, participating in finance-related extracurriculars, or obtaining certifications like the CFA Level 1 to demonstrate your commitment to the field.
  4. Networking and Applications:

    • Continue networking, but focus on alumni from target schools who may be more receptive to helping you once you're enrolled in a prestigious program.
    • Tailor your applications to highlight your determination, work ethic, and the steps you've taken to overcome the challenges of your non-target background.
  5. Final Consideration:

    • If waiting another year is not feasible, WBS is still a solid option and could improve your chances compared to your current position. However, the leap in opportunities between WBS and LSE/Oxbridge is significant, so prioritize the latter if possible.

In summary, grinding the GMAT and aiming for LSE or Oxbridge is the optimal path if you want to maximize your chances of breaking into IB M&A at a top firm. The rebranding and networking opportunities from these institutions are unparalleled and could help you overcome the stigma of your previous university choices.

Yes honestly. Bottom 10 is crazy. Are you at UEL? I think a target masters would help you, you’re clearly competent but need a better brand honestly. How did you end up at your current uni?

First of all, thank you for the reply :). UEL nope, think even worse lol.

Basically my A-Levels were graded BBBB due to covid… and I couldn’t get into anywhere good. So I decided it would be a good idea to do part time work at a supermarket etc for 1yr, then re apply to places. Turns out this wasn’t going to happen, I fkn hated it. So in December I was frantically calling up universities and just went to the only place that would take me that late… extremely bad move I know, but i was naive
