SMU (Cox) vs. Columbia GS – Sophomore Transfer Decision for IB Recruiting

SMU (Cox) vs. Columbia GS – Sophomore Transfer Decision for IB Recruiting

I’m in a similar situation to others on here, weighing two schools for a sophomore transfer:

SMU (Finance at Cox)

Columbia GS (Financial Economics)

I’ve got a full ride at both, including housing.

Right now, I’m leaning toward Columbia GS because I want to be in the best position for investment banking recruiting this fall for Summer 2027 internships. But I’ve never lived in New York, and I’m aware that Columbia GS is structured differently from Columbia College.

That said, I’m also considering transferring again as a junior to Harvard or UPenn after sophomore recruiting, mainly for the resume prestige if I already have an SA lined up.

With all that being said, I’d love to hear your take:

Does Columbia GS offer a real edge over SMU for IB recruiting?

Is it worth moving to NYC if I’m only planning to stay a year or two?

Would transferring again junior year (after securing a return offer) make sense, or backfire?

For context, I’m a veteran (Marine Corps) and just trying to maximize my outcome from a non-traditional path. Thanks for any input.

I’d recommend going to Columbia over SMU given your scenario. SMU does have great IB recruiting for their Alts program but that recruiting/entrance into that program happens freshman year. 60% of undergrads in Cox are Finance majors too, it’s very competitive now, especially if you aren’t apart of the Alts program. SMU does have great connections and punches above its weight class in that area, but Columbia + New York City provides you the same if not even better.

Also an Ivy is an Ivy. I’d 100% take Columbia over SMU for IB recruiting, especially if both are being fully paid for.

For transferring a third time, that seems very weird and a possible red flag. If you are at Columbia I don’t think there is a need to transfer again.
