Based on the most helpful WSO content, your profile seems quite competitive for M7 business schools. Here's a quick breakdown:

  1. Your GPA of 3.6 is solid and within the range of many M7 schools.
  2. A GMAT score of 750 is excellent and above the average for most M7 schools.
  3. Your work experience in both commercial banking and investment banking at a bulge bracket bank is valuable. It shows a breadth of experience in finance.
  4. Your interest in consulting aligns well with many M7 schools, which send a significant portion of their graduates into consulting roles.

However, the lack of strong references could be a potential hurdle. References play a crucial role in the application process as they provide a third-party validation of your skills, work ethic, and potential.

Here's a bit of monkey wisdom for you: Start building relationships now. Reach out to potential recommenders, keep them updated on your plans, and help them understand why an MBA is the right next step for you.

Remember, the MBA application process is holistic, and every part of your application matters. So, while your stats and experiences are important, so are your essays, recommendations, and interviews. Make sure to present a compelling story about your past experiences, future goals, and why an MBA is necessary for you to achieve those goals.

Good luck, and remember, every banana has its peel. It's all about how you unpeel it!

Unsure if I have the skillset for it, plus don't the top firms hire primarily out of either undergrad, mba or laterals from other consulting firms?

Additionally, it would be nice to take 1-2 years to chill after working so much

Just look at class profiles - how many % are white american, south east asians, blacks, military members, lgbt, etc. If you're a top candidate and broadly apply to all of the M7 you'll prob get interviews at most, acceptances at a few. It's just adcoms making up their ideal class profile.

Good recommendations from managers is important.
