TCU vs SMU vs Villanova vs Syracuse vs USC (reach) vs BU vs Tulane

I am a rising senior in HS and have a 4.0 gpa. I am looking to go into IB, PE, or managment consulting. I want to major in business, and am planning on applying for Smu,TCU,Tulane,Villanova,Syracuse,USC(reach), and BU. Which of these will get me the best shot in landing in a bank. P.S I have a backup which is to attend CC for two years and apply to SMU.

Based on the most helpful WSO content, here's a breakdown of your options for breaking into IB, PE, or management consulting:

1. SMU (Southern Methodist University)

  • Strengths: SMU is considered the closest thing to a "Texas Ivy" and has a strong reputation in the Dallas-Fort Worth area. It has a solid pipeline to Houston and Dallas for energy-focused roles and some NYC placements. The business school is highly regarded, and networking opportunities are abundant.
  • Placement: Strong for Texas-based IB and energy roles. Some students also place into NYC IB with effort.
  • Consideration: If you're in-state or can afford the tuition, SMU is a great choice for breaking into finance.

2. TCU (Texas Christian University)

  • Strengths: TCU is a step below SMU in terms of placement. While it has some success stories, the path to IB is tougher compared to SMU.
  • Placement: Primarily regional (Texas-focused). Breaking into NYC IB is more challenging.
  • Consideration: If you’re set on staying in Texas and SMU isn’t an option, TCU can work, but it will require significant networking.

3. Villanova University

  • Strengths: Villanova’s business school (VSB) has been growing in reputation, and its placement into IB has improved significantly. Goldman Sachs recently added Villanova as a core target, and nearly every major bank recruits on campus.
  • Placement: Strong for NYC IB, especially if you’re in the business school. The M&A Society and other finance-focused organizations provide excellent preparation.
  • Consideration: A great choice if you can get into the business school. If not, transferring into VSB is critical for IB placement.

4. Syracuse University

  • Strengths: Syracuse is not a strong target for IB or consulting. While it has a decent alumni network, it’s not as competitive as the other schools on your list.
  • Placement: Limited for IB and consulting. Likely requires significant networking and a strong GPA.
  • Consideration: Not ideal for your goals unless other options fall through.

5. USC (University of Southern California)

  • Strengths: USC is a reach for you, but it’s a strong semi-target for IB and consulting. The Marshall School of Business has a solid reputation, and its alumni network is extensive, especially on the West Coast.
  • Placement: Strong for both West Coast and NYC IB, as well as consulting roles.
  • Consideration: If you get in, USC would likely be your best option overall.

6. BU (Boston University)

  • Strengths: BU is not a target school but has a decent reputation in the Northeast. Placement into IB is possible but requires significant networking.
  • Placement: Limited for IB and consulting compared to Villanova or USC.
  • Consideration: A decent backup, but not as strong as Villanova or SMU.

7. Tulane University

  • Strengths: Tulane has a strong regional presence, especially in the South. It’s a solid choice for energy-focused roles and some IB placements in Houston.
  • Placement: Primarily regional (Houston/Dallas). Breaking into NYC IB is more challenging.
  • Consideration: A good option if you’re interested in energy or staying in the South.

Recommendation

  1. Top Choices: USC (if admitted), Villanova (if in the business school), SMU.
  2. Backup Options: Tulane, BU.
  3. Lower Priority: TCU, Syracuse.

If you’re considering community college as a backup, transferring to SMU or Villanova’s business school would be a strong move. Both schools have solid placement records, and transferring into their business programs can set you up for success.

Can't speak as much on the TX schools, but know people at the others. Villanova is by far your best shot. Monster alum network, great connections to mostly all banks in NYC

Wrong - 2 people in this thread mention Villanova fabricates their placement data. Plenty other complaints from students in this forum

Can't speak on fabricating stats, but of BU, Syracuse, or Nova, Nova is by far and away the best. Have friends at all 3 schools. Nova has double digit placements every year and is half the size of Syracuse and BU. Target school for S&T at all major BB. Multiple kids this year into M&A at EB's.

SMU over TCU for sure, places really well. Admittedly SKUs heavily towards O&G / Energy in Houston (as do all TX schools) but still has a lot of people placing in NYC. There are also a lot of buy side spots in DFW and most of them have seniors who are SMU alum.
