Tech Recruiting out of CBS

Hi everyone,

I was wondering how the tech recruiting (ex. Google, Amazon, FB, Microsoft, etc) is at CBS for MBA graduates. Does anyone know how it's like?

Typically, Sloan and Stanford may be considered powerhouses when it comes to tech recruiting post-MBA, and as everyone knows, finance is what CBS is known for... but I was wondering if anyone has actually gone through (or know someone) applying to tech companies after MBA at CBS.

Looking at the placement numbers, it doesn't look like CBS places significant numbers to the industry, but anyone with experience to share would be appreciated!!

Thank you.

To get a first-hand account of tech recruiting at Columbia, I recommend that you reach out to members of their Technology Business Group, http://columbiatbg.org/. The website provides contact info for students involved in the club (your best bet may be their VP of careers, but you might also try one of the co-presidents), and they also provide some info on their historical West Coast Treks. Looks like last year's trek visited all of the companies you mentioned in your post in addition to a bunch of other firms.

Another top MBA program for tech is Haas. Almost a third of their graduates go into the tech industry each year, so I'd recommend you take a look at them, too, unless you have particular reasons to not include them on your list.

CBS actually has a decent tech network. Companies like Google, Apple, Microsoft, Amazon, etc. do hold company presentations and accept resume drops. If you're deciding between a top 10 or a top 20 (and paying the same amount), I think CBS's brand will go a long way.

Just make it easy for yourself and go to Haas. Marginal, if any, prestige difference, much longer history of tech placement, and you're a 30 min drive away from the main campus of just about every tech firm in the world.

Now that I think about it, I'd probably take the Berkeley MBA over the Columbia one if I were working in tech. MBA alumni network will be much deeper in Silicon Valley. Plus there are a shitload of Berkeley undergrads there as well.

Honestly, would you even go to Columbia for tech?

Due to personal / family reasons, relocating outside of NYC is not an option, unfortunately... (family here, significant other working in the city, house recently purchased, etc)

Just curious, do you plan on moving outside of NYC post bschool? Most tech jobs straddle the west coast (Seattle, Redmond, SF, etc.)

not necessarily. NYC is the second largest IT startup hub in terms of VC deal flows. It is still far from silicon valley but surpass boston and other cities. Big corps like Google/Amazon/Facebook/MSFT all have decent office in NYC.
