Why are you buying a new computer for B school?
current laptop is a dinasaur (5-6 year Dell that doesn't fit the recommended specs for school + its bukly/heavy and i need it stationary at home anyways, so not planning on taking it to class)
plan on taking it to class so ultrabooks seem like a good idea (portable + long battery life)
I can't remember how many years it's been since I used the term "comp" to refer to "computer." Blast from the middle school past.
I just got myself a MBP, best portability, aesthetics to processing power ratio. I was considering Ideapads as well but according to reviews have poor battery and lack small necessary features (no backlit keyboard)
aesthetics to processing power ratio
LOL
Sorry, I couldn't contain myself.
You're going to be surfing the net, using facebook, sending emails and using MS Office.
Go to Newegg.com - Sort by most reviews (not highest rated) - Pick something in your price range ($400 should cover it).
Computer software has been lagging behind computer hardware for the better part of the past 6 years or so. Any efficient low end computer will smoke any application that you're going to be using in school.

Here is a sample review:
Pros: Build quality Processor
Cons: None
Other Thoughts: We are an Apple shop but picked up the iM101Z because it looked like a lot of laptop for a really low, netbook price.
Not to be snobby or Apple Fanboy-ish because we aren't, but we didn't have high expectations - I mean - for around $300.00 how good is ANY laptop going to be? . But we were very surprised - this is a nice looking, well built and fast device - and shockingly it even came with Window 7 Premium 64 bit version.
Sure this is no ultrabook or Macbook Air - but it is pretty lightweight (4lbs) good screen quality and you can add 4GB RAM for around $20.00.
Blows away netbooks because of superior i3 processor.
i abhor lenovo. terrible build quality
i've had my asus for about a year and a half now and i have nothing to complain about. i dropped around $900 for it because i wanted an i7 and a good GPU but they have a lot cheaper. you don't hear a lot about them but everyone i know who has owned one had great experiences and had them for a long long time.
Dell just released their new line of inspiron laptops with ivy bridge processors. They are really good bang for your buck laptops. Look at the 15r or the 15r se... If you really want an ultrabook, Dell makes ultrabooks too, and they are also a good value. Under $1k for top quality specs on the 15r se. That's pretty amazing if you ask me.
Thinkpads are the best laptops for business. Had one, still have it, bought another for b-school.
I would never buy another Dell.
People used Macs fine but obviously takes a little more legwork to get certain things to work properly.
I like Apple products but for biz school an apple computer is a terrible idea. Lots of Excel and Ppt and although you can make it work, my friends had a lot of issues.
I used a lenovo. Pretty cheap and served its purpose (internet/Microsoft office).
