Undergrad WashU Olin vs USC Marshall

Which one is more prestigious and better all around. Which is better for the east coast (obviously USC for the west) and which one is better for IB, Consulting, etc?

Olin places a ton of kids every year into MBB, mainly in Chicago and Dallas, but other cities are represented as well. It’s also a strong semi-target for IB in NYC and some in Chicago (more NYC though). The reason people don’t think Olin is great for recruiting is because it is a relatively small school (only about 200 kids per class) and only about 50 are gunning for IB every year, so there is not a huge alumni presence. It’s definitely a much more consulting focused school though, both in terms of the way the curriculum is structured and the interests of the student body. However, there has definitely been a rise in interest and focus on banking in the students and the school, as it has started making a much larger effort into the IB process over the past couple years.

Does USC have a decent MBB representation and is it a semi-target for NYC? I often hear mixed answers about this. Good info on Olin!

I had this exact decision to make 2 years ago. I ended up choosing USC Marshall at the very last minute. In my opinion after speaking with a lot of alumni from both schools USC would be marginally better for IB and Olin marginally better for MBB... I personally loved the collaborative nature of Olin, whereas Marshall is a lot more of a “competitive” environment. For NYC they are about equal, but I personally would rather be in California than the Midwest. The real tiebreaker for me was the “fun” element. If you are a social and outgoing person, I think you would regret not being a Trojan. (I have a friend who was also making the same decision but for a different major and often laments about the WashU social scene).... if that isn’t something you may want I’d visit both campuses (tough with covid) and look around the students. Are they happy? Are they busy? Are they plentiful?

At the end of the day the 2 schools are pretty much equal when it comes to recruiting. Choose the place you think will make you a happier person- fit is everything

WashU is in a good neighborhood in a meh city. USC is in a meh neighborhood in a good city. STL is far smaller than LA so after the first year or two you’ll probably have seen most of it.

Do you think it’ll be easy enough to get out of California post grad if necessary with USC’s reputation? Maybe to Texas or east coast?
