Vanderbilt MsF worth it?
I recently received an offer to attend Vanderbilt’s MSF program and am weighing my options. As of now, I don’t have a summer internship lined up and have been actively recruiting for full-time roles, mainly landing interviews for business development positions. Breaking into IB directly from undergrad seems unlikely at this point.
My plan was to continue heavy networking until summer to secure a boutique IB internship. I come from a non-target (University of California system) and have two summer internships at a boutique bank in SF. My ultimate goal is to land a full-time IB role, and I’ve heard great things about Vanderbilt’s placement.
For those more familiar with the program or the IB recruiting landscape, do you think the MSF at Vanderbilt is a strong path to breaking into IB if I put in the work? I have seen some comments on other threads of how this school helps, but I would love to hear insights from anyone who has gone through it (especially when networking with Vanderbilt on your resume). My primary concern is whether I can effectively convert my background into a full-time IB position, given that I’m entering the cycle a little later than some of my peers.
Thanks in advance for any insights - I really appreciate the help!
Vanderbilt's MSF program is widely regarded as one of the stronger options for breaking into investment banking, especially for candidates coming from non-target schools. Based on the most helpful WSO content, here are some key insights to consider:
Strong Placement in IB: Vanderbilt's MSF program has a solid track record of placing students into investment banking roles, particularly in middle-market and regional banks, with some success at bulge brackets as well. The program's alumni network is active and well-leveraged, which can be a significant advantage for networking and securing interviews.
Networking Opportunities: Vanderbilt is known for its effective use of its alumni network. As mentioned in WSO threads, networking with alumni from the program can be a game-changer. Many students have successfully used the Vanderbilt brand to secure interviews and internships, even if they come from non-target backgrounds.
Your Background: With two summer internships at a boutique bank in SF, you already have relevant experience that can be built upon. Combining this with the Vanderbilt MSF program and a strong networking effort could position you well for full-time IB recruiting. Your plan to secure a boutique IB internship before starting the program is also a smart move, as it will further strengthen your resume.
Timing and Effort: While entering the cycle later than some peers might seem like a disadvantage, the MSF program essentially gives you a second chance to recruit for IB roles. However, as highlighted in WSO discussions, you will need to put in significant effort to network, prepare for interviews, and stand out during the recruiting process.
Program Reputation: Vanderbilt's MSF is considered one of the top programs outside of the elite MIT/Princeton tier. It offers a good balance of brand recognition, alumni support, and career services, making it a strong choice for someone with your goals.
In summary, Vanderbilt's MSF program is a strong path to breaking into IB, provided you are proactive in networking and recruiting. Your background, combined with the program's resources, should give you a competitive edge if you put in the work.

Vanderbilt’s MSF can definitely help with breaking into IB, especially if you’re willing to put in the work. Coming from a non-target school, having Vanderbilt on your resume will open doors and connect you to a strong network. Given your boutique IB experience already, the MSF can help strengthen your profile, but you’ll need to hit the ground running with networking and recruiting. It’s a solid route if IB is your end goal, but be prepared to hustle and take full advantage of the opportunities it offers.
Are you a junior right now?
I am currently a senior. I applied to a few big name MsF programs as a shot in the dark for a way to get into IB as I realized I was not getting far during this cycle
Which programs? Which did you get into? And did you end up attending?
Hey, considering the options you currently have and from which uni you are from, Vanderbilt's MSF seems like a pretty good option to break into IB. Good luck :)
Hiya, what did you end up deciding and how did it turn out?
(I’m also from a state school & looking at this program—would love to hear your experience)
