WashU vs Rice vs UNC vs Notre Dame (updated from WashU Olin placement)
Edit: I have decided to keep my options open and re-evaluate. The schools I have been accepted to that are worth considering are Washington University in St. Louis, Rice University, UNC and Notre Dame. I get the feeling that Notre Dame is the school that y'all would recommend, but I haven't seen it before so I would have to visit.
Hello all! I am an 18 year old who will be going to college in the fall. I have been accepted to my top choice, Washington University in St. Louis, and I will most likely attend even if I am accepted to Duke and UPenn. I am in ArtSci, but it is very easy to double major at WashU and I am planning on also getting a BSBA from Olin. How is career placement in Olin Business School for undergrads in consulting (Chicago or NYC)?
If I decide to pursue investment banking instead, would Olin be strong in IB placement as well?
Why would you take it over Duke or Penn?
I'm sure they send some grads to Chicago MM IB's, but not even close to Duke and Penn-Wharton. Michigan or Indiana would be better than WashU
I really like the campus environment at WashU, and the student body seems elite but laid back. WashU and Olin are highly ranked. Why would Indiana surpass them?
i go to Wash U. Congrats on getting in, the ib placement for the undergrads is very solid. Goldman sachs recruits on campus along with other BBs. PM me if you have questions. people that are suggesting indiana dont know what they're talking about.
Disagree respectfully. Only a few of the BBs come and the recruitment is limited compared to Duke and Penn which are both strong targets. That being said a very large portion of the finance majors place in MM IB and WashU is a strong enough school that if you are set on it, you should be able to get interviews almost anywhere with 3.8+ GPA and solid networking.
Thanks for the reassurance. Before asking on here I would've assumed WashU had good placement considering its academic reputation. I'll be sure to pm you if I think of anything.

I went to Olin undergrad and wasn't thrilled with placement. I got my job through contracts at home instead of OCR
My mom was a managing director at a ratings agency and she knew a lot of bankers. She told me if I can't get interviews she would help. So while I would prefer good placement, I think I will be fine regardless. I really like WashU, so I was hoping that the recruiting would be top notch but even if it isn't I will matriculate.

Why would you take that school over Duke and Penn if you got into the later mentioned schools? Duke and Penn are very strong for consulting and IB placement. Don't make the wrong decision dude.
Honestly, selecting your college based on your impression of the student body after a two hour (or even two day) visit is stupid. Being a student is radically different different than being on a tour. It's like buying a car based on a TV ad. The impression you get has no real basis in reality. I can remember my overnight at my undergrad: thought everyone I met would be a bunch of chill athletes. Never met those guys again, and found out my school was filled with mostly quiet, anti-social dweebs.
You should take Duke or Penn if you get in. I'm sure you can meet some 'laid back, but elite' kids there too. The recruiting is better. The reputation is better. The student bodies are smarter. You're not in St Louis.
I disagree with the statement that the student bodies at Penn and Duke are smarter than the student body at WashU. Of the three, WashU actually has the highest SAT ranges. I doubt the students would be any less bright than at other elite schools.
WUSTL Olin grad (couple of years out) here with strong family ties to Duke. Although Triplectz has me on recruiting and reputation as of this moment, you're absolutely right about smarts. WUSTL's student body is extremely bright and has the caliber of kids that have the numbers to try for a spot at Duke and Penn/Wharton. Heck, there were 3 in my freshmen suite alone and one of them made the very same decision you're making right now (he's with Bain now). I've definitely met my fair share of future captains of industry and you will too. Its rep has risen exponentially over the past 15 years and will only continue to go up. Think about how much better it will be in 3 years time for your SA recruiting. In my book, STL is better than Durham (fact) and Philly (I'm a big time NY sports fan). You'll have a ton of fun and be challenged at the same time. Just make sure you join a frat. Do it dude. (Plus, WashU has one of the most rigorous pre-med tracks in the country and produces amazing doctors. Make yourself a few pre-med friends and you'll have your health looked after down the line as well)
Hey guys, after some more thought I'm still undecided. I've been admitted to Rice and UNC and I have yet to hear from UPenn and Duke, so I'm keeping my options open. Between the three I'm currently choosing from, if I don't get into Duke/Penn, where would have the best placement in business anywhere? I know Rice opens a lot of doors in Houston, and UNC would probably have better placement on the east coast, right?
Edit: I was also just accepted to Notre Dame today. I have heard they have extremely good placement.
You don't mention it as one of your top schools, however Rice places very well into IB in Houston. Networking is also very easy since you are right in the city. Just something to consider.
From experience, WUSTL is a strong school with great academics in Olin. However, I do not think it places as strong as Notre Dame or UNC.
All I know is that the WUSTL undergrads that I came in contact with were extremely bright and all had solid job offers lined up after graduation (BB IBs, PE, etc). The job placement/salary numbers for Olin undergrads was far stronger than that of its MSF program. I can also tell you, that based purely on placement numbers and salary, Olin's undergraduate bschool ranks #2 among all business schools (not bad for a school in St. Louis).
Olin's consulting placement is pretty good, but I was not that impressed with ibd placement, especially in nyc. It's mostly mm ibd in the midwest. Also finding that the # of alumni in PE is relatively low, given the school's rank.
