What course of action should I take when transferring?
I am an URM who started Community College about 3 weeks ago and I am wondering if I should try to transfer out in a year or complete my two years.
To give a bit of background : - I never did any standardized testing since I was not required to.
-Highschool GPA was solid but unspectacular . (Around 3.5)
- Don't have much in the way of ECs either.
What should I do? I realize that if I try to transfer out in one year my highschool stats would be scrutinized more and I would have to do the SAT/ACT and find an efficient way to develop good relationships with my first semester teachers for good letter of recommendations.
There is also the expectation that if I attempt to transfer in a year to the very good schools , the expectation is that I would have been able to be admitted as a highschool student - I am doubtful and unsure of this.
Spending my two years would mean my highschool stats would not really be taken into account and it could mean that I get to redefine myself. However, the issues that I am worrying about are the opportunity cost of my choice to spend 2 years and if I would be ready for fall recruiting when I transfer; I would be unable to vie for the Freshman and Sophomore internships that are available for minorities . Even if I were unable to nab any of these opportunities , I will have still learned and gained experience from these moments. Additionally , I am worrying about being at a disadvantage when I have transferred and Junior recruiting begins. It may be difficult prepping for that moment.
What should I do? What would you do ? All help/advice is welcomed.
If I was you, I would suck it up and take ACT/SAT and get transferred as soon as possible. Assuming $$ is not a problem. If I didn't have ACT/SAT, that's my own fault. I wouldn't want to be left behind and lose the early start advantages (internships, class difficulty, etc)
@whattherock" Thank you. Money is definitely an issue for me however.
Any other input from others?
Get out of the CC as fast as possible.
Take the SAT/ACT, and apply to your local state school. Literally any school is going to be better for you in the long run than staying there. Frankly, the top schools aren't going to look at you as a CC transfer anyway, so I'd be looking at transferring into your closest big name school. Once you do that, there's plenty of advice on how to get from non-targets to "xxxx" career.
You're also not going to escape your HS years, even after 2 years of CC. That extra year isn't going to avoid the scrutiny of standardized tests/ECs/GPA anymore than you get with just 1 year. HS is still going to be the majority of your academic career.
The one thing I did wrong when transferring from CC was not applying early enough, and not applying to all the schools I wanted to. I applied to my dream school a week before the deadline and thought that was early enough. I ended up being wait-listed to said school because they never received my transcript on time. By the time I sent out another copy of my transcript it was too late. So make sure you apply a couple months in advance. I was dead set on my dream school so I didn't apply to many back up schools. Make sure you apply to any and every school you could see yourself at. You always want options. Good luck!
Thanks
Anymore advice from anyone ? I know this place is loaded with good information, so I am expecting some more opinions . :)
Now this is a little more outrageous. nobody will spoon feed you. get back to thinking yourself. Yes there're tons more of information, but it's your job to help yourself, not ours.
You are right ,asking for more advice on a FORUM from people in the industry/who are knowledgeable is certainly outrageous.
I have explained my thinking about the process and have exhausted the searchbar. The fact is most people aren't faced with this scenario and those who do go to CC , usually attend for the two years , so I am just looking for as much thoughts/opinions as possible . Isn't that the point of a discussion. ?
I guess I was suppose to do like others and create identical topics until one of those threads yield a considerable amount of responses .
Thank you nonetheless.
those with identical topics are making fools of themselves. join them if you want. your attitude is already funny. I got no strong GPA, no ACT/SAT, no extracurriculars (I got NOTHING), and I want to transfer to the biggest named schools. like WHY?
if you cannot find exact scenario, go get similar scenarios by others. if you cannot find a perfect scenario, maybe there isn't one. you're helping yourself by not being needy. otherwise, good luck to ya.
