What did you do with your car when you went to B-school?
Do most people bring their car on campus with them? Do they sell their car? Or just leave it at home? I'm thinking about buying a car soon, and B-school is in my plans for a few years from now. So I'm just curious about what others have done
I imagine it really depends on what school you end up attending.
uh yeah lol if youre at mccombs fuqua or darden is significantly different than stern or columbia.. i imagine wharton and chicago could be a toss up? im trying to figure out the deal for mine
Definitely a smart move to plan this in advance. I purposely avoided buying a new car knowing that there was a chance I wouldn't need it at school. ShortTheWorld is right -- it depends on where you're headed and whether or not you plan on having a car after you graduate.
(Though if you've got a real shot at HBS, which gives need-based fellowships, you might want to spend your available money on a car sooner rather than later.)
General rule of thumb:
DC, NYC, Chicago, and maybe Boston --> don't need a car (though you can keep one in Chicago and DC, but expect to pay heavily for a parking spot)
Anywhere else, obviously you need one.
Buses or trolley cars? Don't remember there being much public trans at UCB, but haven't been there in probably 12 years.
Boston -> Sold my car. You can get around pretty easily on the T or a bicycle. Cabs when it's cold. Zipcar available on campus for odd trips.
Parking on the street is hard to find, and parking spots cost an arm and a leg.
My in-laws live 1.5 hrs from where I'll be in school and they've offered to let my wife and I use them as temporary storage. Both our cars are owned free and clear so I'd rather not sell them just to have to replace them after business school 2 years later. Only cost to carry them is some cheap insurance since they won't be driven much.
You can put them in 'storage' insurance for pretty cheap. Allows you like 20-30 'self-reported' miles to keep the engine in shape.
It obviously depends on where you live.
I sold my car before moving to Chicago and couldn't be happier. Public transportation is amazing...I have no regrets. In fact, I wouldn't mind being carless for the rest of my life.
