What double degree to choose?
I am currently an Australian high school student with an 99.05 ATAR. I've decided already to enrol in UNSW but have huge uncertainty in the double degree i should choose. I've got the following choices: maths + econ / maths + finance / finance + econ. I'm afraid that getting a 4.0 GPA (equivalently WAM85) would be difficult for the first two combinations and i can ensure a 85WAM for double degree in finance and economics. Anyone giving any advice? I expect to enter AM / IBD / RM departments of BBs or macquarie group after graduation!!!
Based on the most helpful WSO content, here's what you need to consider:
Finance + Economics: This combination is a solid choice if you're aiming for Asset Management (AM), Investment Banking Division (IBD), or Risk Management (RM) roles. It aligns well with the skills and knowledge required for these fields, and if you're confident about maintaining a high WAM (85+), it could give you a competitive edge in recruiting. A strong GPA is often a key factor for breaking into top firms, especially in Australia where the competition is fierce.
Maths + Finance or Maths + Economics: These combinations are more quantitative and could open doors to roles that value strong analytical and technical skills, such as quantitative finance or roles in trading. However, as you mentioned, maintaining a high WAM might be more challenging with these combinations due to the rigorous math courses. If you're not confident about excelling in these subjects, it might not be worth the risk, especially since GPA is critical for your target roles.
Recruiting Considerations: In Australia, firms like Macquarie and BBs often value strong academic performance, relevant internships, and networking. A Finance + Economics degree might provide a more balanced workload, allowing you to focus on internships and networking opportunities, which are equally important for breaking into these firms.
Your Interests and Strengths: Ultimately, choose a combination that aligns with your interests and strengths. If you enjoy and excel in math, the Maths + Finance or Maths + Economics options could be worth considering despite the potential GPA challenge. However, if you're more confident in maintaining a high GPA with Finance + Economics, that might be the safer and more strategic choice.
In summary, if your primary goal is to maximize your chances of entering AM, IBD, or RM at top firms, and you're confident about maintaining a high WAM, Finance + Economics seems like the best fit. It balances relevance to your career goals with a manageable workload, giving you the best shot at excelling academically and professionally.
