What major should I apply for at Columbia.

Ok, so Columbia is on my list due to the location and prestige. The reason I'm looking at Columbia over NYU is that NYU is so fucking expensive. Anyways, what major should I choose for IB at Columbia? Columbia has some weird majors: Financial Engineering, Financial Economics, Economics, or Applied Math. I'm a senior in high school, and I have the stats to get in. 34ACT, 3.99 UW GPA, decent EC, working on the essays right now. I plan on going into IB then Hedge Fund ideally. HF is really appealing to me.

Yea I know that it is a reach, but I was just saying that I have the stats to get in so it is a serious consideration and not a random application that I am filling out.

you dont apply for a major at columbia. they ask you for a preference in your application but it doesn't matter what you say. the only thing you choose is whether you are applying for columbia college or engineering school. Once you get in you can declare any major you want in your school your second year. I believe financial engineering and business management concentration are the only exceptions you actually need to apply to your sophomore year; all other majors/concentrations you just declare. so just decide what school you want to apply to for now (financial engineering is in the engineering school, financial econ is in the college, etc) and you can decide on a specific major once you start

Hey man, congrats on the stats- that takes a lot of hard work and dedication, good luck with applications. Also- you are thinking extremely ahead, which is good, but you can really apply for any major and then change at whatever school you go to. You should choose whatever major you are most interested in and will do well at- what matters most is your GPA and if you are really interested in what you are studying. To get into IB, many BBs do not really care as much about your major as they do the school you come from and your GPA. If you are at somewhere like Columbia it really will not matter what you will major in, on the other hand if you go to NYU- definitely only go if you get into Stern and study business obviously.

Columbia and NYU, as you know, are completely different entities. Columbia is IVY L, takes more SAs, and has a better rep overall. NYU Stern is obviously great also, in fact I heard they send more kids to BBs than some ivy's, but I still would go with Columbia-long term it will provide you with many more opportunities/rep/prestige.

Sorry, but I got off track- back to your major: If you get in and go to Columbia major in whatever you want and get a good GPA, network while in school starting your first semester with alums/BBs, and you will be absolutely fine. The major thing is less and less important now for BB IBs. It would be helpful to take acc and fin classes just some basics, not necessary though. Best of luck!
