What MSF is better for job placement in NYC: non-NY Tier 1 or NY Tier 2?
Assuming that I want to work in NYC , should I choose MSF at better school, based in not NY state, or MSF at worse school, but in NY state?
For example, Vanderbuilt, WUSTL, Virginia vs. Baruch, Syracuse, Rochester
I would suggest looking at a schools placements. You don't have to be in NYS to get a job in NYC. Vanderbilt, WUSTL, Villanova, UVA, all place into finance roles in NYC. The two programs you listed actually in the state have far weaker placements than the programs outside of the state.
Thank you. And you mentioned UVA... Does University of Virginia have MSF program? In their site they write only about MBAs, PhD and executive education.
Ms in commerce. Very similar to an msf.
While I must point out that Rochester Simon & Baruch is a complete tier away from Syracuse......( I still like Rochester better with its mid-tier brand, MSF in NYC option? and good experiences from my friends.)
you will find a big handicap in "better tier" with its heavier reliance on OCR. For example, you're probably not looking to find a job in Nashville or St. Louis, unless you only have an offer in such places.
It really depends on how you pair up that advantage with yourself. If you're more shy, a better pedigree can talk more for you; if GPA or the academic rigor isn't your strong suit, or your Visa constraints you for only big sponsoring employer, you might as well spent more time networking by sitting closer to NYC.
You do realize Syracuse and Rochester are at least 5 hours from NYC. They offer minimal advantage.
And you don't rely more on OCR from these schools not in NYC metro area. You rely more on non face to face networking. Either way, you can get to NYC on a short flight and just need to figure it into your cost of going to these programs.
I know Vanderbilt has a trip to NYC built in and I am fairly sure wustl does the same.
5 hours when you fly within NY State? if you think flying from Vandy or WUSTL is any easier, give me a break . First I never advocated much for Syracuse. Second, I said Rochester has MSF in NYC option that MAY work better (FT & PT types), and third I have friends in the Simon School campus right now with first-hand experiences in the MS programs.
Heavy reliance on NOT face-to-face networking is a recruiting problem, and this exactly why the Vandy and WUSTL have to suck up the costs and do those group travels for their MSFs to hold their job statistics. It's why the Whartonites used to ride trains into NYC on Fridays to network.
it's only to initiate the REAL face-to-face interactions to have companies sign up their OCR slots and have some relationship building time for students. Otherwise the placements will be miserable. If you're in the south or midwest, flying to NYC isn't sustainable with class work, aside from being a huge waste of time and money, and that's why stuff like Baruch and NYU Stern can also give good payoffs for strong networkers, even though they aren't viewed as the greatest options out there.
LOL. Flying out of SYR or ROC to NYC isn't cheap. And if you are flying, what is the sense. Might as well go to the better school.
1) UR NYC is a fine option, but for people who are working. 2) Advocating for UR (which is very expensive) over Vanderbilt or WUSTL because it is "closer" to NYC is bad advice 3) Vanderbilt is a semi-target. Recruiter come on campus. You can also connect with alumni through phone and email. You don't NEED to be face to face. It is a nice to have, not a must have.
Someone can easily look at placements from Vanderbilt and WUSTL and compare them to the schools that are in NYS and easily see that being close isn't the end all, be all.
NYU also doesn't have an MSF so mentioning it is irrelevant. Your Wharton analogy is bad as well. People who go to Stanford, Dartmouth, UVA, Duke, etc all have no problem placing into NYC or elsewhere and are beyond a simple train ride into NYC.
what i've seen through my MBA travails is that unless you are going to a top tier school, you should go as close to the place where you want to land...
I even still had some issues competing against the likes of the local tier 3/4 because they were simply here and had the networking opportunities.
exactly. which one do you like better as a recruiter... a HYPS resume or someone you kept talking with
They would likely choose HYPS kid that networked... Target schools and networking aren't mutually exclusive. Although I do agree ceteris paribus you should choose a school in the region you want to be i.e. Tuck over Haas for the east coast, but not University of Illinois - Chicago over Wharton for Chicago recruiting.
