Why Are So Many Minorities Shut Out of Market Rate Development?

Header says it all. I’ve been somewhat successful at development throughout my own career, but found it impossible to go from Affordable back to Market Rate. Is it because of prestige of schools? I see people that did their masters at the same school as I did that are not minorities and get these opportunities at Starwood and Related. Or it timing? Is it the perception lack of qualified candidates? Do I pretty much have no choice but to try and go out on my own one day? (Even though we know how tough that can be)

It saddens me. As we continue to see new spaces grow, like BTR, and already see how it’s pretty much white washed already. That’s just one example/sector.

I expect the monkey sh$t from non minorities but it’s a legit questions. At this point just wondering if I should just stay in my lane, in affordable development, because it seems like market rate developers treat their side of the game like its rocket science.

Fuck minorities. What's next, Affirmative Action 0% interest loans or even grants for African/Hispanic drug dealers and criminals to buy mansions in Beverly Hills and penthouses in SoHo?

Affirmative action has helped white women more than any other group. I can't even respond to your second comment. It's just bigoted and narrow-minded but thank you for speaking your truth. Just a reminder of how some think.
