Why is an Accounting Major Looked down upon ?
Most of the undergraduate finance programs I have browsed have a strong investment based choice of courses. For every corp fin course, there is about 3/4 investment type of courses. Also based on the type of jobs bankers do a strong base in accounting is far more beneficial than an investment base( for banking). So it may be wise to choose Accounting and take 1/2 electives in Finance, and if you really want to overkill you could minor in Mathematics / CS.Having spoken with a few senior bankers or people who work closely with them (Rating agencies/lawyers/Big 4 Valuation) I got a sense that they somehow look down on someone with an accounting degree(I literally mean degree and not a background in bean counting),so why do they have such a beef with accounting majors ?I should mention that this is solely based on my personal experience so I am willing to adjust my perception. Cheers
nobody has beef with accounting majors, just with CPAs
^agree. I don't think anyone cares as long as you don't major in management or marketing. In my mind a Finance degree and an Accounting degree are basically the same thing anyway. CS or Mathematics is pointless for most finance. I actually suck at match and it doesn't matter. Excel does all the work for me.
