Writing a Thank you Email post an admissions Interview.
Hi guys,
I recently had my Kellogg MSMS interview.
Was wondering whether it's a good idea to email my interviewer to thank her for her time. Nothing too fancy.
From what I understand, it's a commonly accepted practice across the US as far as job interviews go and portrays a good impression upon the interviewer.
What do you guys think?
Would appreciate any advice you might have!
Thanks in advance!
It almost certainly won't affect your outcome in any way, but it can't hurt to send a one line thank you email.
By the way, if more than 24 hours (ie after next day) have already passed since the interview don't bother - it's too late and will likely hurt more than help.
Hey, Thanks for your response! It's only been 12 hrs since the interview ended. Anything specific you reckon I should/shouldn't include?
Just say thank you for her time. If there is something especially notable you remember from the interview, include a quick reference to it - for example, if she happened to ask about a hobby you're interested in or something interesting you've done and mentioned she found that interesting, you could mention that briefly. However, remember that she has probably interviewed a ton of people and is likely getting lots of thank you notes and that one won't be the reason you get or don't get admitted - so don't make her read a long thank you email about why you really should be admitted.
Something like this (completely hypothetical example) would likely be a good thank you letter:
Hi (xyz),
Thank you so much for taking the time to interview me yesterday - I really enjoyed speaking with you. I remembered that you mentioned you'd like to visit a hot air balloon event sometime - here is a link to upcoming local events in your area that I thought you might find useful.
Our conversation reinforced my interest in (abc program) and I look forward to learning the outcome of my application soon.
Kind regards,
(123)
Why would that hurt? 24 hours seems too soon in my opinion and based on the advice I've gotten. I'd wait a day or two and then send it.
Just personal opinion - in my opinion, waiting a few days gives the impression you've forgotten about it and only remembered a few days later - ie unimportant in your eyes. Others may disagree and I could be plain wrong, but I've always sent the following day. Anecdotally, I've sent a bit later a couple of times and while I don't always get a reply, I've never gotten replies when sending a couple of days later but have gotten pretty positive replies when I've sent one within 24 hours.
Most people write up their interview report within 24 hours. Sending it after that will have no affect if that's what you are going for. If you are just being polite it probably doesn't matter when you send it.
