AM I SOL?

So recently I have decided that after going to college for four years and changing major a good amount of times that I do not want to go for med school. Sadly everything that I had done was to get in med school and to get prepared for it.

After months of searching and reading on this forum I have came to the conclusion that I would like to do S&T. I know that the first two years of working in S&T I would be doing nothing but learning and getting peoples food and drinks. I also know that people in S&T "bust each others balls" and for me personally that would not be an issue either since nothing ever offends me and I'm a pretty laid back guy and get along with everybody.

But my problem is that most of the jobs are given to interns and I don't know how would I get an internship position if I just get my BA in biology. I could get a BA in biology, math, or chemistry and I'm only 30hours away from each one. I have made a 4.0 in all my math classes(everything from college algebra, trig, cal I,II, and III, and differential equation) and right now I'm trying to get a business foundations certification from UT Austin while finishing my BA. Sadly I think I might get a B in foundation of accounting because it took them a while to get my accommodation down.

So what do you guys think I should do? How can I approach this in a way that I could land an internship or something in S&T.

A MFin is honestly your best bet. Princeton, MIT, and other top programs place well.

S&T is brutally hard to get into at the moment. Even kids with multiple S&T internships (and good reviews) are getting turned away. The industry has shrinking its trading floors.

But before you do, reach out to some alumni. Try to shadow them for a few hours. Just like you wouldn't apply to med school without working in a hospital, you shouldn't drop everything for S&T without having been on a trading floor.

I was thinking of doing the sales in S&T because I have been working in retail since I was 16 and I also work for multiple companies online but have a mean job at a retail store for 5 years now also. I'm really good at building relationships with customers and learning everything about the product, or service, that I'm selling. I might have misunderstood S&T but I believe they are sellers and traders and I've read that computers are starting to take over it but I didn't know if it was over the entire thing or just the trading part.

Thanks for all the guidance guys! I really appreciated it.

Rainmaker...I actually emailed this grad student that was suppose to be over the S&T and he replied back that he doesn't know anything about S&T and that he is not over that anymore. He said he forwarded my email to the person that is over it now and she said that she doesn't know anything either but she'll see if anybody else does and get back to me and never did.

I also went to the UT's school of business and went to every office I could to ask them about S&T. See if anybody knew about it or that wanted to go work in trading or anything and all of them said that they don't know and that they don't have any information about S&T. In fact some didn't even know what it was(which really shocked me). But I'll try to find somebody again. I don't know if there is anything or anybody in Austin that I could go to and see if I could get some experience.

Captinkoolaid: thank you for the link. I'm going to contact them and see if I could do it next summer.

Going Concern: That's what I was thinking but needed some insurance. I should of majored in computer science like I wanted too from the beginning and I could of gone for anything that I want it with that degree....from med school to Wall street to working for gaming companies. sigh*

For S&T, the math major is the right choice. Bio is the "easy" STEM major...I don't think med schools care about your major, provided you nail the gmat and your pre-reqs.

I will still echo the shadowing comment. Though similar in principle, retail sales and institutional sales are quite different.

As for the future of S&T: While you will always need salesmen, their value to the firm will be based on either (1) moving massive volumes of simple products, or (2) moving extremely specialized, complex securities. As you might guess, the latter will be harder to cut.
