any Wall Street trading desks that would involve more coding? (intern asking)
I'm a CS major and interning on a trading floor this summer. I heard more and more of trading is going into CS these days, but I've only heard of this in relation to HFT firms or prop trading firms. If I'm interning on a traditional wall street trading floor, are there any desks in particular where coding could come in handy, or I'd be more likely to be able to code something?
Yes, definitely. I would say the majority of the job on an exotic options desk is coding, for example.
Stick to more quantitative products and the chances of coding increase significantly. Even in other desks you might have a chance to crack out some vba, though.
That's awesome to hear! Can you tell me what languages you primarily used for coding at an exotic options desk? Were you able to work on these things as a summer intern?
well, i never worked on an exo desk, but they sit right behind me
i would imagine they primarily use vba so their tools are easily used by traders but probably also c++/sql/matlab/r/in-house languages
As a summer intern even if you don't get assigned to make tools, i definitely suggest for you make your own little projects and show them to the traders. You won't be doing any trading/booking so you have all the time you need.
In addition to the exotic product desks, also electronic execution desks, such as GSET, MSET, etc.
