Anyone with experience of taking the SIE or FINRA exams online by remote proctor?

I was just attempting to enroll for the SIE and there is a remote proctoring exam option. I wonder if anyone has experience with this?? If an erasable whiteboard and markers are allowed? Can you use the built-in camera on your laptop? Thank you!

Hi @Tonilana

While I have no personal experience with the online exams, I'm a professional trainer and tutor for FINRA and NASAA exams. Four of my clients have taken online exams over the past few weeks and their experiences were positive overall. It doesn't seem like there's a clear cut better option between online vs. test center experiences, but there are definitely pros and cons:

Online testing pros

  • Reduced test anxiety due to normal surroundings (vs. a strange test center)
  • No traffic or "getting there on time" concerns
  • No additional risk of contracting COVID

Online testing cons - Once an answer is submitted, you can't go back - No physical scratch paper

A few notes on the cons. You can still take bathroom breaks, which are obviously not monitored (a webcam is on you the entire time you're testing in the part of your home you're testing in). FINRA is concerned test takers will go to the bathroom, look up an answer to a question, then go back to the exam. This is why they don't allow questions to be reviewed. Also, you'll have to submit the answer to the question you're currently on prior to taking the bathroom break. In regards to the scratch paper, you will get a virtual notepad (like notepad on your computer), just not a physical one.

There are some other small differences between the two ways you can sit for the exam, but these are the points my former students felt were most important. I recommend looking at FINRA's and Prometric's website for more information. I hope this helps!
