Have a friend looking to switch from banking (Post first year analyst) to S&T. I know the transition from SA banking to FT trading has been discussed, but what about FT banking to FT trading?

Banking experience is highly transferrable to almost anything finance. Switching to S&T is then just all about networking and finding the opportunities.
It' actually not that easy, especially in the current environment. He'll need to network and get lucky
MBA then into S&T as an associate a possible path? If so, are particular schools better for trading than others, that is, are the typical top 7-10 the same if trading/trading heavy hf is the goal?
Varies from bank to bank and desk to desk (at least, at many BB's). Where I am at, there are more financial mathematics/engineering masters grads than MBA's.
is risk/merger arb considered to be in AM group or S&T at an investment banking? Is there the hedge fund arm of an investment bank?
Of course, after banking it's a possible exit opps. But rather in an HF than in a BB. Maybe it's possible too, i duno.
Most banks have Special Situations Trading desks that make markets in risk arb.

What about a masters of finance or financial engineering as a segway?
Certain MBA schools within the T7/10 place better for S&T. The guys on my desk went to schools known for their finance programs.

A good Master in Finance is better for S&T. MBA is rather for IBD or consulting.
What are the good Masters in Finance/Financial Mathematics/Financial Engineering/Etc...? Anything part time worht doing?
See a lot of differing opinions on this topic but anything worth going at outside of Princeton and MIT?
CMU & Berkeley are other programs worth considering for MFE. I've also heard Columbia, NYU, Stanford, UChicago have good MFE/Financial Mathematics programs but someone else might have better knowledge. Make sure your friend has his or her programming and math down pat. These programs are highly quantitative.
I think your friend wouldn't have so much hardship in transferring from banking to S&T since banking also facilitate similar kind of transaction.
