Boss Seriously does not care
I'll cut to the chase.
I'm underpaid by 50% because this is a "great opportunity" to be a junior trader on a FI desk.
I have been on the desk for over a year, have received almost no training, and the only thing I do all day is just cold call accounts all day. I haven't done a single trade and literally am just sent off to do any task any person on the desk can think of.
I had a dealer reach out to me today to bid on something we were showing on the street and got yelled at by my boss because I told him that I had a bid on something in his book while he was on the phone. He's across the entire office and I had no idea, no need to get hostile. He then ignored the entire bid and just told me to have the person IB him instead.
I relayed that to the person and he said the only reason he was even reaching out was because he liked me and wanted me to have the trade. No trade was even done with my boss because I don't think the bidder was going to be as generous since he didn't even know my boss but knew me very well.
I feel like I'm drowning. I'm beyond depressed. I have no way of lateralling to another firm because I have no book of clients for my own because I have no help getting anything set up and when I do, they are taken from me for a senior trader.
that sounds frustrating - I’m sure it must feel tough.
Can you offer to help on things that you see others doing that would build your skill set?
also if you have mental health issues from this, it’s always good to talk to a professional about it.
Oh, it sounds like you're in a tough spot, my friend. I can see why you're feeling overwhelmed and underappreciated. It's not easy when you're not getting the support and training you need, especially when you're working in a high-pressure environment like finance.
Firstly, remember that it's okay to feel this way. It's a sign that something needs to change. You're not alone in this, many people have been in your shoes and have found a way out.
Here are a few things you might consider:
Have a frank conversation with your boss: It might be difficult, but it's important to express your feelings and concerns. You might want to discuss your role, your expectations, and the lack of training you've been receiving.
Seek mentorship: Is there someone else in the company or industry who could provide guidance? A mentor can offer invaluable advice and help you navigate your career path.
Networking: Building relationships within your industry can open up new opportunities. This could be through attending industry events, joining online forums, or reaching out to people on LinkedIn.
Consider other roles or companies: If things don't improve, it might be time to look for other opportunities. You don't necessarily need a book of clients to move to another firm. Many companies value skills, potential, and cultural fit over existing client relationships.
Take care of your mental health: This is crucial. If you're feeling depressed, it's important to seek help. This could be through a mental health professional, a trusted friend or family member, or a support hotline.
Remember, it's okay to prioritize your happiness and mental health. You're not stuck, and there are always options. Keep your chin up!
