Can you hold a long and short position on a futures contract at different prices?
Question as stated in the title
If I was long at $4000 on ES can I go short at $3990 while keeping the long?
The point being to remove the chance of margin calls if I hold for the long position.
I am familiar with trading different expirations in this manner, but can’t find any information about doing it on the same contract
Yes, you can, but what's the point? If the future goes up $1, you make $1 from your long and lose $1 from your short, so your pnl is 0. If the future goes down $1, again your pnl is 0. So you have no position. All you did was locking in a loss of $10 by buying $10 higher than you sold.
