If you're already on the sell-side, internal mobility would probably be the first step. Reach out to current traders and see what their day to day it like (technically you should already be pretty close to your sector traders but I digress). After that gauge the waters and float the hypothetical to them, see if they are responsive having a research person go to sales. I see no reason why this should be a path for you if you already know your names.
