Distressed/HY credit trading desk analyst interview

Hi all, does anyone have insight into the interview process for desk analyst roles, particularly in distressed / special situations / leveraged loans?

I’ve just been invited to interview at a BB in London and honestly didn’t expect it. I’m currently a junior sell-side credit analyst in Europe (c. 1.5 years of experience, no UK visa). I already cover HY at my current job, but it’s mostly BB to B+ names. I’ve worked on some distressed situations, though it hasn’t been my main focus.

If anyone here has gone through interviews for distressed or special sits desk analyst roles, I’d greatly appreciate any insight or advice on what to expect. Thx!

For a distressed/high-yield (HY) credit trading desk analyst interview, especially at a bulge bracket (BB) in London, here’s what you need to know based on the most helpful WSO content:

1. Interview Focus Areas

  • Technical Knowledge: Expect questions on credit analysis, financial modeling, and distressed debt concepts. Be prepared to discuss credit metrics, leverage ratios, and covenant analysis. Since you already cover HY, they may test your ability to analyze lower-rated credits or distressed situations.
  • Market Knowledge: Demonstrate your understanding of the distressed and HY credit markets, including recent trends, key players, and macroeconomic factors affecting credit spreads and defaults.
  • Case Studies: You might be asked to analyze a distressed credit situation or a leveraged loan. This could involve reviewing credit documents, identifying risks, and presenting a thesis on whether to buy, hold, or sell.
  • Trading Acumen: Since this is a desk analyst role, they’ll likely test your ability to think like a trader. Be ready to discuss how you’d price a distressed bond or loan, assess liquidity, and manage risk.

2. Behavioral Questions

  • Team Fit: Highlight your ability to work in a fast-paced, high-pressure environment. They’ll want to see that you can handle the intensity of a trading desk.
  • Experience with Distressed Situations: Even if it hasn’t been your main focus, be ready to discuss any distressed cases you’ve worked on. Focus on your analytical approach, key takeaways, and how you added value.
  • Motivation: Be clear about why you’re interested in distressed/special situations and how your current experience aligns with the role.

3. Key Preparation Tips

  • Brush Up on Distressed Concepts: Review restructuring processes, bankruptcy laws (especially UK/EU-specific ones), and distressed valuation techniques.
  • Credit Docs Familiarity: Practice analyzing credit agreements, covenants, and restructuring terms. This is often a key part of the interview process.
  • Mock Case Studies: Practice creating a short investment memo or pitch for a distressed credit. Include your thesis, key risks, and valuation.
  • Market Trends: Stay updated on recent distressed cases, leveraged loan trends, and macroeconomic factors impacting credit markets.

4. Visa Consideration

Since you don’t have a UK visa, be prepared to address this if it comes up. Highlight your willingness to relocate and any steps you’ve taken to facilitate the process.

5. Additional Resources

  • WSO Threads: Check out threads on distressed credit interviews and trading desk roles for more insights.
  • Books: Consider reading Distressed Debt Analysis by Stephen Moyer or The Art of Distressed Investing for deeper knowledge.
  • Networking: Reach out to current or former desk analysts for advice and mock interviews.

Good luck! If you nail the technicals and show a strong understanding of distressed markets, you’ll stand out. Let me know if you need more specific prep tips!
