Do's and Don'ts with regards to S&T networking

Hello everyone,

As an aspiring rates trader, who has recently started the networking process (1st-year undergrad) I wanted to ask;

1. What are some general principles with regards to networking within the Sales & Trading Industry that I should be following? (And how do they differ, if they even differ from other businesses on the street?)

2. What are the things I should not be doing or saying in a coffee chat or phone call?

3. What are some of you're experiences networking within the S&T industry?

I would appreciate any advice with regards to this topic.

1) People are probably less able to meet you during market hours, this is kind of obvious though.

2) Nothing too particular here, just general common sense for networking stuff.

3) Make sure you come well-researched about the market covered by who you're meeting with. Again, a common sense type thing. They aren't expecting you to know everything, you're a first year undergrad. But show that you've done some base level research.

1. With respect to market hours, steer clear of the +/- half hour before and after close. You should also be conscious that there's often daily/weekly team meetings that you'll have to schedule around. In S&T, people's schedules are often highly organized in their Outlook calendars, so be sure to reference that if you have the ability to when scheduling calls. Around lunchtime can actually be a good time to network as there's not too much volume then.

2. Just be aware that time is limited - sometimes they really only have 10 or 15 minutes to chat. Make sure to come prepared with what you want to discuss, but don't be robotic in how you present your questions.

3. Like what ActuarialQuant said, ask them to talk about themselves. People in S&T have better WLB than those in other roles, so people have a lot of interesting hobbies and interests. It's still a client facing role though so be ready to get interrupted haha. I once had a hour long phone call with a trader, but had 20 minutes of conversation between us because he had two pricing requests during it.

Most importantly though, make sure to keep in contact with people you felt you had good conversations with.

Best of luck!

Treat S&T as one massive frat house. Never wear suits or ties, wear some polos, khakis and boat shoes.

Don't have virgin/pleb hobbies like reading, computers, gaming or any remotely virgin stuff. You better start liking golf, lacrosse and rowing.

Be misogynist, conservative and racist. Keep mentioning how much you hate women and immigrants.

Make sure to bring up the fact that your family has a boat and spends their summers in Nantucket/Greenwich/WASP heavens.
