EM Resources / Study Material

Hi all, hope you’re well.

I’ll soon be rotating on an EM Rates desk as part of a summer internship, and I wanted to ask what resources people would recommend to build a better understanding of economies that are less frequently covered in mainstream market commentary.

I’m particularly interested in dedicated news outlets, Substacks, X/Twitter accounts, sell-side-style research, academic papers, or any resources that discuss recurring themes and dynamics in emerging markets rates.

Any insights, tips, or recommendations would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you.

To build a solid understanding of emerging markets (EM) and their dynamics, here are some recommended resources and strategies based on the most helpful WSO content:

News Outlets and Publications

  1. The Economist and Wall Street Journal (WSJ): These are excellent for staying updated on global economic trends, including emerging markets.
  2. Local News Sources: For specific countries, look for local publications that provide insights into political and economic developments.

Books

  1. Breakout Nations and The Rise and Fall of Nations by Morgan Stanley's head of EM: These are highly recommended for understanding the broader themes and challenges in EM investing.

Sell-Side Research

  • Subscribing to sell-side research from major investment banks can provide in-depth analysis and forecasts for EM economies. These reports often cover macroeconomic trends, interest rates, and political risks.

Academic Papers

  • Look for papers on EM-specific topics like currency volatility, inflation, and political risk. University libraries or platforms like SSRN can be helpful.

Recurring Themes and Dynamics

  • Focus on understanding macro risks, such as currency devaluation, inflation, and political instability. As highlighted in WSO discussions, managing these risks is crucial for EM investing.

Practical Tips

  1. On-the-Ground Research: If possible, visit the regions or companies you're analyzing to gain firsthand insights.
  2. Geopolitical Analysis Services: Subscribing to services that offer geopolitical analysis can help you stay ahead of major political or economic shifts.

Networking and Forums

  • Engage with forums like Wall Street Oasis to gather insights from professionals who have experience in EM investing.

These resources and strategies should provide a strong foundation for your rotation on the EM Rates desk. Good luck with your internship!
