Equity Sales to Equity Research at a Bank

Hi, is this a well known transition/possible transition at a bank? Say, covering a specific sector within equity sales for 1-2 years, as an Analyst. Is equity research a feasible exit opp? Has anyone here done something similar/know colleagues that have? Thanks

Based on the most helpful WSO content, transitioning from Equity Sales to Equity Research is indeed a feasible move, though not the most common. The two roles share some overlapping skill sets, such as understanding markets, sectors, and client interaction, but they differ significantly in focus. Equity Research is more analytical and involves building models, writing reports, and providing in-depth sector analysis, while Equity Sales is more client-facing and focused on pitching ideas and facilitating trades.

If you've spent 1-2 years covering a specific sector in Equity Sales, you may have developed strong sector knowledge and client insights, which can be valuable in Equity Research. However, to make the transition, you would likely need to demonstrate or develop skills in financial modeling, valuation, and report writing, as these are core to Equity Research.

Networking within your bank and expressing your interest to the Equity Research team can be a good starting point. Additionally, showcasing your sector expertise and willingness to learn the technical aspects of research can help make your case. While it may not be a typical path, there are examples of professionals who have successfully made this transition.
