Exit Opportunities from Product Management in S&T – Seeking Advice
Hey WSO,
I’m currently a Product Manager at a bulge bracket bank, working in a newly formed team that’s focused on building innovative trading platforms. Our mission is to develop new products that unlock revenue growth opportunities that don’t exist currently. My responsibilities include managing platform development, ensuring alignment with trader and client needs, and exploring untapped market potential. I’m also involved in selling these products to clients, which has given me valuable experience in client relations and sales.
I come from an engineering background and have learned most of my financial skills on the job, participating in various training programs provided by my company to bolster my knowledge.
While I’m on track for a promotion to Associate next year, I’ve been feeling that Sales & Trading isn’t providing the intellectual challenge or experience I’m seeking. I’m interested in moving into more deal-oriented roles in the primary markets, where I can contribute to value creation rather than engaging in the zero-sum dynamics of secondary markets.
I’m considering a few paths and would appreciate any insights:
1. Private Equity/Venture Capital/Investment Banking:
• Feasibility: How realistic is it to transition into PE, VC, or IB from my background?
• Valued Skills: Which aspects of my experience would appeal most to these firms?
• Further Education: Would pursuing a CFA, Master’s in Finance, or an MBA enhance my chances?
2. Corporate Strategy/Development:
• Transition Steps: What would it take to move into corporate strategy or business development roles, either within finance or other industries?
• Education Needs: Is an MBA necessary or highly beneficial for this path?
3. Deal-Oriented Roles:
• Possibilities: What other deal-oriented roles could be a good fit given my background in product management, client engagement, and engineering?
• Preparation: What steps should I take to position myself for these roles?
4. Other Career Paths:
• Suggestions: Are there other roles I should consider that leverage my product management experience, technical background, and client-facing sales skills in S&T?
I’m also contemplating whether pursuing the CFA charter or enrolling in a Master’s in Finance/MBA program would be worthwhile to facilitate these transitions.
Any advice, personal experiences, or suggestions would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks in advance!
