Full Time S&T

I’m graduating May 2026/Dec 2025 and I interned at a BB buy-side trading desk. However, due to a current reorganisation - none of the interns at this desk got ROs. I would love to stay in trading post-grad but is that possible outside of SA return offers?  Despite being a BB, a majority of my team has stayed on that team their entire careers and didn’t give much help in trying to get me an offer at a similar desk somewhere else.

Landing a full-time trading role without a return offer is definitely possible, but it requires a strategic approach. Based on the most helpful WSO content, here’s what you should focus on:

  1. Leverage Your Internship Experience: Highlight your experience on a BB buy-side trading desk in your applications and networking conversations. Even without a return offer, this is a strong credential that demonstrates your exposure to trading and the skills you’ve developed.

  2. Network Aggressively: Since your team hasn’t been helpful in connecting you to other opportunities, you’ll need to take the initiative. Reach out to alumni, former colleagues, and professionals in trading roles at other firms. Use LinkedIn, alumni databases, and industry events to build connections. Networking is often the key to breaking into trading roles, especially when you’re not coming from a return offer pipeline.

  3. Target Smaller Firms and Boutiques: While BBs are competitive, smaller firms, proprietary trading shops, and hedge funds may offer more opportunities for someone with your background. These firms often value hands-on experience and may have less rigid hiring pipelines.

  4. Consider Lateral Moves: If you can’t secure a trading role immediately, consider starting in a related position (e.g., risk management, middle office, or research) and transitioning internally. Many professionals have successfully moved into trading roles after proving their value in adjacent areas.

  5. Stay Persistent and Flexible: The trading job market can be tough, especially without a return offer, but persistence pays off. Be open to relocating or exploring different asset classes or trading desks to increase your chances.

  6. Refine Your Pitch: Be prepared to explain why you didn’t get a return offer in a positive light. Focus on the reorganization and emphasize your performance and enthusiasm for trading.

By combining these strategies, you can position yourself strongly for a trading role post-graduation. Keep grinding, and don’t hesitate to seek advice from others who’ve navigated similar challenges!
