GS London vs Barcap HK

Offers for S&T summer internship in GS London and Barcap Hong Kong.

Originally from Hong Kong and prefer lifestyle/food etc in Hong Kong.

Feel GS has a bigger name but think Barcap is growing too.

Really want to go for Barcap Hong Kong but feel it'd be wasting a valuable GS opportunity.

Do people see bigger long term prospect if I choose to start in GS?

Opinions much appreciated! Many thanks!

It depends. Do you want to work in HK for FT? GS is a better offer because its GS and its London office is strong. Barcap is not as strong in HK as it is in the US (they did not buy Lehman's asian assets), but Barcap gives you the best opportunity to get a FT offer in HK through the internship itself plus possibly making contacts on HK.

Both opportunities are great and taking one over the other will not affect your FT recruiting efforts or your long term career. The most important thing is that you pick the company where you have the best connection/will be doing something you enjoy or are interested in. You might want to make your decision on what you want to do in your career. As students, we love to get internships and instantly think how we can "trade up". The truth is you should think of this internship as the first step of your career and not worry about the mercurial name recognition that comes with GS. Three years from now all that will matter is what you have done at your current job and no one will care where you Summer interned.

Just curious, but how did you get interviews for these positions/ when did you find out about the offers? I assume you go to a target.

Good Luck!!

GS London.

  1. GS is a better brand.
  2. Location. If you start out in Hong Kong you'll most probably get pigeonholed and it'll be hard to move out of Asia. If you start out in London you could always move to Asia at a later stage in your career with no disadvantage. Bear in mind that also that asian markets are not as sophisticated as NYC and London.
