Highest ROI move for Markets: Big 4 consulting or still do MSc?
Happy Monday Monkeys, would appreciate some perspective here.
I am a final year Econ student at a semi-target. Strong academics, prior Markets summer internship at a strong MM (not converted), and this summer I’m doing another Markets internship at a weaker MM. Currently, I have an offer for LSE MSc Finance and an offer from Big 4 consulting at a non London Office. My long term objective is to aim for a macro hedge fund seat in rates or fx.
My own rough view right now:
- if I convert the summer, probably just start work
- if I don’t convert, LSE now is probably the cleaner option, albeit high risk high reward
- Big 4 first then LSE later is more of a downside protection play than true max EV
So I guess the question is: What is the highest ROI play here if the only thing I care about is maximising probability of ending up in the strongest possible Markets seat over the long run Would be good to hear from fellow monkeys who have walked down a similar path.
My scenario tree is basically this:
1. If I convert the Markets summer
Do I:
- take the full time offer and start straight away
- or still do LSE MSc Finance, use the extra cycle / brand / London network to try recruit for a better seat/platform, then re-enter full time after.
My instinct is that if I convert, giving up a FO markets seat for optionality is wasting time, but part of me wonders whether LSE gives a good shot at upgrading platform while I’m still early.
2. If I do NOT convert the Markets summer
Do I:
- go straight to LSE and use it as a clean re-recruiting year for Markets
- or take the Big 4 consulting role for 2026-27, then do LSE the year after, and use that period to apply again for 2027/2028 summer / grad roles
The case for Big 4 first is:
- exp
- income / less risk
- no dead year
- another line on CV
The case against it is obviously that it is not a relevant markets role, pivoting back would be difficult.
3. Hybrid idea
Does it make any sense to ask the Big 4 firm to let me work part time while doing LSE part time, assuming I could somehow sort office location/logistics? That feels very messy but I’m trying to think through every angle.
Thank you for spending time and reading this.
