HFT / algo - you can just apply online - there is high demand for talent
manual discretionairy - you will need to make personal contact

there is a shortage of properly experienced talent. if you have what they are looking for, it doesn't matter how you contact them...why do you think they have the online listing?
obviously, if you can email the manager directly, you will get an interview faster
i've getten interviews with Millenium, FirstNewYork, Exodus and a few others just by sending an email to the generic recruitment email address (you must introduce yourself in the email, why you are contacting them, why you would be a good fit, etc...)
