How to answer this q

currently at boutique s&t trying to lateral out to mm or bb s&t. this gig followed a short consulting job that i managed to get right out of college..During interviews now when trying to convey how i've always wanted to do s&t, I often get asked, "if you knew you always wanted s&t, why did u start at a consulting gig"
Now the one thing i have going for me is the consulting gig was trading oriented but from more of MO perspective (more efficient product control and financial control). So back to my Q, the real answer is it was all I could get back in 09 and figured if I could at least get my foot in the door to network, I knew ide have a shot as a spot on a desk (which did work as im now at a boutique) My question is i do get looked down on when i start saying that this boutique consulting firm was all i could get out of college, even with the spin? any better reasoning or just go with the truth and cite the tough job market in 09? thx

I would go the honest route and say due to the tough job market you had to take what you could get, but then spin it in a way that shows that the consulting job was actually very beneficial (outside of networking) say something like it allowed you to better understand how the markets opperate out side of the exchange or something similar to that. Also back your stated passion up, let them know when you 1st got interested in the markets. Like for me it was when i visited the CBOE when i was in 7th grade ever since then I have been an avid WSJ reader and I track the markets on my own.
