How to Break into Commodities

Hello champs, I'm studying a BBA with major in Finance and minor in Computer Science at a non target school (ICADE) in a non target country (Spain). I'm currently in my penultimate year and I wanted to get into commodities but for what I've found, there are only a few summer internships from the bigs and I've already been dinged so I just wanted to hear some tips/advice from you guys (courses, how to network regarding this industry,etc...)

Thanks

Hola! Based on the most helpful WSO content, breaking into commodities trading can be a bit of a journey, but it's definitely achievable. Here are some steps you might consider:

  1. Entry-Level Roles: Start with roles in Operations or Risk, then move to an Analyst position. From there, you can hope for a trading seat to become available.

  2. Experience in Logistics: If you're already working in logistics, especially if you're brokering freight or dealing with price negotiation, you're in a good position. Try to demonstrate to traders that you have a skillset that helps them.

  3. Networking: This industry is very relationship-driven. Do whatever it takes to get to know people in the industry. This could be through internships, work experience, or even just reaching out to people in the field for a chat.

  4. Internships: Don't just focus on internships with "trading" in the title. If you can find something at a trading company, no matter what the role, pursue it. It will give you the opportunity to be around traders.

  5. Lateral Moves: Once you've acquired some experience and made some contacts, you can move laterally within the industry. It's not uncommon to see people change shops every two to three years, or even return to their original firm after a stint elsewhere.

  6. Patience: It's important to note that getting a trading seat within the first year of starting is unlikely. It's a process that requires patience and persistence.

Remember, the key is to get your foot in the door any way you can. Once you're in, it gets a lot easier to land yourself something full time. Good luck, amigo!
